Women’s Soccer pushes past UNE

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Roger Williams University sophomore Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.) broke a scoreless deadlock with a goal in the 71st minute, and the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team held off the University of New England in the closing stages to take a 1-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory Saturday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The win improves the Hawks' overall mark to 13-2-1 and 5-1-0 in conference play. UNE suffered its first CCC loss (4-1-1) to drop to 8-6-1 on the season.

After few quality scoring opportunities in the first half, Roger Williams turned up the pressure in the second frame and finally cracked the scoring column when Kaiser took a pass from senior Katie Lydon (Riverside, R.I.) and directed a low shot from the top of the left side of the box just inside the far post.

The Nor'easters would have a few opportunities to tie the match in the final 10 minutes. Senior Alexis Wells (Franconia, N.H.) put a shot on goal from close range in the 84th minute, and senior Katy Marshall (Eliot, Maine) directed a header just over the crossbar two minutes later.

Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) had three saves to record her sixth shutout for the Hawks, who led 17-9 in shots, including an 11-6 cushion after halftime.

UNE first-year Brielle Robinson (Monson, Mass.) finished with three saves.

Both teams return to action with league games Wednesday (Oct. 23). Roger Williams hosts Curry College at 4 p.m. and the Nor'easters head to Gordon College to take on the first-place Fighting Scots at 3 p.m.
