Western New England takes down Field Hockey on Senior Day

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team had its Homecoming Weekend game spoiled by Western New England University Friday evening, as the Golden Bears defeated the Hawks 4-0.

Prior to the game, the Hawks' three seniors, Bianca Cappiello (Schuylerville, N.Y.), Kayla Newtown (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.), and Hailey Wolfe (Mansfield, Mass.), for their role in helping develop the interest in the program and assisting in elevating it to varsity status.

The early part of the game was marked by a lack of passing lanes as both teams played tight defense and contested all loose balls.

Wolfe was able to put a pair of shots on board in the second minute, but had one attempt blocked and the other saved by Golden Bear keeper Emily Arnold (Gilford, N.H.).

Western New England put its first shot of the game in the 24th minute and nearly capitalized on it, as Jaynie Mueller (Colorado Springs, Colo.) fired a shot from the top of the arc. She had her attempt denied by a kick save from Melora Lavoie (Poland, Maine).

The Golden Bears were able to take the lead shortly into the second half. In the 43rd minute, Mueller took a shot from the middle, leading to a save from Lavoie. However, her kick save brought the ball to her left side, leaving an open shot for Shannon O'Rourke (Foxboro, Mass.) and her fourth goal of the year.

Less than a minute later, Sabrina Lyeisuk (Orange, Mass.) made her way undeterred down the field and found O'Rourke open on the left side for an open goal.

O'Rourke was not done, as she tallied two more scores in the 50th and 51st minutes, taking advantage of loose balls in the goal area to increase the Golden Bear lead to four.

With 13 minutes left, Nicole Angeley (Norwalk, Conn.) served up a great pass from just inside midfield that made its way through the Golden Bear defense but just rolled outside of the reach of Meghan Curran (West Milford, N.J.).

Arnold made four saves for the Golden Bears in the shutout, while Lavoie had six saves for Roger Williams.

Roger Williams will take on Johnson & Wales University for the second time in six days as the Hawks host the Wildcats on Monday. Western New England will wrap up the regular season next Saturday at Endicott.
