Field Hockey holds off Johnson & Wales

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University played the second game of a home-and-home against Johnson & Wales University Monday evening, coming away with a 2-1 victory.

The Hawks earned its second win in a week against Johnson & Wales, with the Hawks picking up a 5-3 road win last Tuesday against the Wildcats.

Johnson & Wales went into the game with Aughtum Slavin (Wilmington, Del.) playing kicking back, as the Wildcats were without regular keeper Jaclyn Lyons (Hillsborough, N.J.). The Wildcat defense helped do its part to make Slavin's night easier, holding the Hawk offense to only one shot over the first 21 minutes of the game.

However, the Hawks were able to break through in the 26th minute, with Hailey Wolfe (Mansfield, Mass.) stealing a clearing pass from the top of the arc. She was able to bring the ball up the middle and put a shot to the left side for the goal.

Meghan Curran (West Milford, Conn.) tried to feed Wolfe a pass to the back leftside of the goal with three minutes to play in the first half, but Wolfe could not get a good handle on the ball.

The Hawks added another score shortly into the second half, with Kylie Burst (Howell, N.J.) sending up a pass to Curran in the 41st minute. Curran was able to fire a shot to the right corner of the goal to put the Hawks up by two.

Amy Martin was able to make a heads-up defensive save on a shot by Sarah Link (Blossvale, N.Y.) in the 55th minute to keep the deficit at two.

The Wildcats had a two-minute possession in the 60th minute that saw a pair of corners that ultimately led to a goal by Cassandra McClaftin (South Hadley, Mass.). McClaftin fired a bullet from the top of the arc that found its way into the left corner to bring the Wildcats within one.

Johnson & Wales kept up the offensive pressure throughout the final ten minutes of the game, putting up five penalty corners and take five shots over that span. However, the Hawks were able to keep the Wildcats off the board and hold on for the win.

Melora Lavoie (Poland, Maine) had seven saves on the evening in the win.

Roger Williams (5-12) plays the third match of its four-game homestand Wednesday evening against Salve Regina University. Johnson & Wales closes out its inaugural season with a record of 5-13.
