PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Johnson & Wales University posted an 82-77 victory against the Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team in a non-conference contest at the Wildcat Center on Tuesday night.
Sophomore Quarry Greenaway (Westchester, N.Y.) scored a game-high 29 points and added six rebounds as senior Curtis Lucas (Providence, R.I.) had 15 points, four assists and two steals for JWU while junior Frank Robinson (Providence, R.I.) added 12 points and six rebounds in the win. Sophomore Robert Lewis (Providence, R.I.) rounded out the double-figure scorers for JWU with 11 points, three assists and three steals.
Junior Ryan Palumbo (Warwick, R.I.) led the way for Roger Williams with 21 points, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals while freshman Chris Bardwell (North Andover, Mass.) tallied a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards in the setback for the Hawks.
Roger Williams controlled the action early in the contest and took their first double-digit lead when a three-pointer by freshman Josh Syska (Peabody, Mass.) gave the Hawks the 21-11 advantage with 13:04 left in the first half. Johnson & Wales responded with a 14-4 run and tied the game at 25-25 on a three-pointer by Greenaway with 9:06 left in the stanza. The two teams traded baskets for the next several possessions with the game knotted with just under four minutes left in the first half. The visiting Hawks then used a 7-0 run and the had a 46-39 lead after a pair of free throws by Palumbo. Roger Williams took the 51-47 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
JWU opened the second half with an 9-4 run and tied the score 55-55 on a layup by Lucas with 17:11 left on the clock. The score was knotted 62-62 before JWU went on a 14-6 run, capped by a free throw by Greenaway to take their largest advantage of the game, 76-68 with 2:41 remaining. Roger Williams was able to cut it to four late in the contest, but wouldn't be enough as Johnson & Wales held on for the 82-77 victory.
With the victory the Wildcats are 1-1 on the season while Roger Williams falls to 0-3 on the year. The Wildcats will return to action on Friday, November 22nd when they take on John Carroll at the Buffalo State Invitational at 6:00 p.m.
