UNE takes season finale over Field Hockey

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team could not earn its first Commonwealth Coast Conference win, as the University of New England staved off the Hawks with a 3-1 win Saturday afternoon.

The Nor'Easters wasted little time getting on the board, with Casey Clark (Franconia, N.H.) putting in a pass from Brooke Marshall (Bow, N.H.) in the second minute of the game for a quick 1-0 lead.

Despite giving up the early goal, the Hawk defense held its own against the Nor'Easter offense. Roger Williams limited to UNE to seven shots in the first half, three of which came in the final two minutes of the period.

Conversely, the Nor'Easters were able to hold off the Hawks in their transition attempts. UNE was able to get sticks on the Hawks' passes and hold RWU without a shot in the first half.

In the second half, Clark added her second goal of the game, putting in a shot in the 36th minute off of a penalty corner by Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.).

From there, the Hawk defense went back to work. UNE had a penalty stroke stopped on a heads-up save by Melora Lavoie (Poland, Maine) in the 40th minute. Shortly after, Clark later had a breakaway attempt denied by a strong stick play by Kylie Burst (Howell, N.J.).

The Hawks continued to battle defensively, and ultimately was rewarded in the 46th minute, when Hailey Wolfe (Mansfield, Mass.) was able to make her way down the field and deflected a shot off a UNE defender and in to pull the Hawks within one.

The Nor'Easters were able to get the goal back in the 60th minute with Marshall knocking in a goal from Tavella in the 60th minute. The 3-1 score would hold up as the Nor'Easters completed the undefeated season in conference play.

UNE outshot the Hawks 21-2 in the contest while attempting 19 penalty corners.

Holly Smith (Peabody, Mass.) picked up the win, while Lavoie tied a career-high with 12 saves in the loss.

UNE (14-5, 12-0 CCC) will host Nichols College Wednesday afternoon in the CCC Semifinals, while Roger Williams concludes its inaugural varsity season with a 5-14 overall record (0-12 CCC).
