Women’s Soccer moves on to CCC Semis

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The #19 Roger Williams University Women's Soccer advanced to the Commonwealth Coast Conference Semifinal game with a 2-0 win over Western New England University Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks came out aggressive early on, with Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.) nearly giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the second minute of the game. She was able to grab a contested ball in the box away from a Golden Bear defender and put a shot up that just sailed over the net.

In the 15th minute,  a Hawk cross into the box slipped through Golden Bear keeper Briana Kubik's hands. Western New England caught a break when the Hawks could not get a clean shot off before WNE's defense was able to clear the ball.

The 18th minute saw the Hawks just miss an opportunity to put a shot on net, when Katie Lydon (Riverside, R.I.) sent a pass up the middle to Hannah Noel (Adams, Mass). Noel just got ahead of the defense and was called offsides before she could put a shot up.

Haley Carignan (Scarbrough, Maine) later just missed putting a head on a cross from Kaiser in the 26th minute. The ball just sailed wide past Carignan as she had an open look on the net.

Offensive opportunities for Western New England were hard to come by in the first half thanks to a stout Roger Williams defense. Brionna Voight (Springfield, Mass.) and Katelyn Cummings (Feeding Hills, Mass.) were the only players to put up shot for WNE, but both had their shots easily turned away by Hawk keeper Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.).

The second half began much like the first, with Roger Williams staying on the attack. In the 58th minute, Kristen Casey (East Longmeadow, Mass.) served up a nice corner kick to Kristen Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.) who was able to send a header to the right side. However Kubik was able to make a great diving stop on the shot to keep the game scoreless.

The Hawks' perseverance paid off in the 66th minute, when Lydon was taken down in the box, earning her a penalty kick. Lydon was able to fire the shot into the right corner of the net to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Bears put a scare into the Hawks in the 85th minute when Cummings put up a free kick that sailed over Jaques head and careened off the crossbar. Becca Mercieri (East Longmeadow, Mass.) followed up with a shot that just went over the net.

The Hawks were able to add an insurance goal in the closing minutes, with Tetreault and Julie Lowenstein (Malta, N.Y.) assisting on a score by Noel with just under three minutes to play.

Jaques needed three saves to earn her 17th win of the season. Kubik had five saves in the loss.

Roger Williams (17-2-2) will host the winner of the Eastern Nazarene/Gordon matchup on Wednesday. Western New England bows out of the tournament with a record of 9-7-4.
