Volleyball enters CCC Tournament at #1 seed

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Roger Williams University has claimed the top seed for the 2013 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) volleyball championship, which begins with quarterfinal matchups on campus sites Tuesday, November 5.

The Hawks (28-3 overall) earned the top seed in the conference tournament after posting a 7-1 record in CCC play and will earn a bye in Tuesday's quarterfinal round. Second-seeded Salve Regina University (25-3, 7-1) will also earn a bye in the quarterfinals.

RWU enters the CCC tournament as the top-ranked team in the most recent NCAA Division III New England Regional Rankings. Salve Regina currently holds down the 7th spot in the regional rankings, while third-seeded Endicott College (21-14, 6-2) and fifth-seeded Western New England University (21-8, 5-3) were ranked 11th and 12th, respectively. Fourth-seeded University of New England (14-9, 5-3) and sixth-seeded Eastern Nazarene College (15-16, 3-5) completed the six-team field.

Two quarterfinal contests will be played on Tuesday, as #3 seed Endicott will host #6 seed Eastern Nazarene, while #4 seed University of New England will host #5 seed Western New England. Both matches will begin at 7:00 p.m.

CCC tiebreaking procedures were used to sort out a pair of ties in the conference standings.

Head-to-head play in conference play determined the first and fourth seeds in the tournament. For the number one seed, Roger Williams earned the nod over Salve Regina by virtue of RWU's 3-2 victory in the teams' CCC match on October 23. Similarly, UNE was awarded the fourth seed over WNE as a result of the Nor'easters' 3-1 triumph in the teams' September 28 contest.

Quarterfinal winners will advance to the semifinal round which will be played on Thursday, November 7. Top-seeded Roger Williams will host the winner of the University of New England vs. Western New England quarterfinal, while #2 seed Salve Regina will host the winner of the Endicott vs. Eastern Nazarene quarterfinal contest. Semifinal matches are tentatively scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Semifinal winners will square off for the conference championship on Saturday, November 9 at 1:00 p.m. at the site of the higher seed.
