Women’s Soccer rolls to fifth straight victory

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team picked up its fifth straight win with a 6-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Wednesday afternoon.

Offensive opportunities were hard to come by early in the game. Both teams struggled to get clear shots as the defense contested passes for both sides.

The first clear chance for either team came in the 18th minute, when Kristen Casey (East Longmeadow, Mass.) fired a free kick from 20 yards outside the top of the box for Roger Williams. Her attempt was on line and had a chance to score but sailed just a couple of feet over the net.

Haley Carignan (Scarborough, Maine) later took a hard shot in the 20th minute, but was denied by Corsair keeper Madison Boucher (Southampton, Mass.). Ten minutes later, UMass-Dartmouth had its first legitimate attempt, with Lily Higgins (Hanson, Mass.) finding a long pass in the box. She put up a shot to the left side, but was denied by Hawk keeper Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine).

Roger Williams broke through in the closing minutes of the first half, with RWU's leading scorer Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.) adding to her season total.) Kristen Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.) hit Kaiser with a touch pass to the left, who then shot it to the right into the corner for her 11th goal of the season.

UMass-Darmouth nearly tied the game in the final minute of the half. Erica Farias (Tiverton, R.I.) had an open shot on net with 46 seconds left, but sailed it just over the goal.

The Hawks needed little time in the second half to add to their lead. Carignan took the ball into the box and notched a short pass to Kaiser, who fired a shot up the middle to give RWU a 2-0 lead.

Carignan added another score for RWU in the 61st minute, tapping in a pass from Tetreault for her fifth goal of the year. Tetreault would later pick up her fourth goal of the year in the 68th minute. She caught the Corsair defense off guard with a deep shot outside the box to the left side.

UMass-Dartmouth's Liz Stearns (Medway, Mass.) put up a long shot in the 78th minute that bounced over RWU keeper Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.) and almost bounced in but hit off the crossbar. Becca Field (Brentwood, N.H.) followed the loose ball but bounced her shot off the crossbar as well. Shelby Friedland (New Bedford, Mass.) followed shortly with an attempt of her own, but O'Donovan dove to her right to make the save.

Roger Williams tacked on two more goals before the end of the contest. In the 77th minute, Carla Salcedo (Mexico City, Mexico) turned and fired from the right corner of the penalty area for a 5-0 Hawk lead. Then with under two minutes left in the game, Jordyn Labriola (Hopkinton, Mass.) found Cagnie Antczak (Kendall Park, N.J.) in the box for her first score of the season.

Martin improved to 11-2-3 on the year, making three saves in 65:39 of action. O'Donovan closed out the remainder of the game with two saves. Boucher had four saves for the Corsairs in the loss.

On Saturday, Roger Williams travels to Eastern Nazarene while UMass-Dartmouth hosts Plymouth State.
