Volleyball sails past the Coast Guard Academy

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. -  The Roger Williams University Volleyball team sails past the Coast Guard Academy in non-conference match up between regionally ranked teams.  The 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-17) victory improves the Hawks overall record to 18-5 while Coast Guard drops to 18-9.

The Hawks opened the match with a dominant first jump at to a quick 8-2 lead after the first two service rotations. By the third service rotation the Hawks were up 13-4 and after the 4th server they had increased the lead to 18-5.  The Hawks delivered 16 kills in the first set compareed to Bears 4.

The second set looked like it was headed the same direction as the Hawks jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead.  The Bears battled back over the next three service rotation to to bring back to 6-6.  The Bears took their first lead in the match on a ball handling error that gave them a 8-7 advantage. Neither team was able to make a significant run or lead by more than two points at anytime in the set. With the set deadlocked at 23-23 the Hawks closed out the set with a kill by Flaherty and then an attack error by the  Bears.

In the third set the Hawks jumped out to a 21-6 lead.  The Bears would gather some momentum late to get to 17 points but the Hawks were never threatened in the final set.

Ashley Dumont of Coast Guard had 9 kills to match the Hawks Brittany McMullen () and Kristen Boyers ().  Michelle Mc Gill picked up 22 digs for the Bears and Maria Batas () led the Hawks with 19. 

Coast Guard returns to action on October 28 to take on Wellesley in New London, Conn. at 7:00 p.m.  The Hawks return to the court tomorrow to take on the University of New England at 2:00 p.m. at home in Bristol, R.I.
