Women’s Soccer shuts out Bridgewater State

Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The visiting Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team posted a 1-0 shutout victory over Bridgewater State University in non-conference action on Wednesday night at Swenson Field.

The Hawks improve to 9-2-3 as they are unbeaten in their last ten games (7-0-3).  The Bears fall to 3-8 overall with their fourth straight setback.

Junior forward Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.) tallied the lone goal of the game in the 13th minute.  Classmate Haley Carignan (Scarborough, Maine) set up the scoring strike with a thru ball to the right side.  Kaiser beat the BSU netminder with a shot inside the left post.  Senior forward Kristen Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.) also assisted on the goal.

The Hawks outshot the Bears by a margin of 26-8 including a 16-1 edge in the first half. The Hawks dominated play over the first 45 minutes but could manage just the one goal.

BSU junior netminder Kristin Reardon (Weymouth, Mass.) kept the Bears within striking distance throughout the contest, particularly in the first half.  Reardon made two terrific diving stops as she stymied sophomore midfielder Jenna Hart (Cheshire, Conn.) in the 22nd minute and Kaiser in the 33rd minute.

Reardon finished with 11 saves in the game with seven of those coming in the opening stanza.

The Bears also received a team save by senior midfielder Emily Lane (Parsonsfield, Maine) in the 27th minute.  Lane kicked aside a header attempt by Kaiser off a corner kick.  Sophomore midfielder Allyson Pontes (Dartmouth, Mass.) erased a potential scoring bid late in the second half as she cleared the ball off the line following a Kristen Carey (East Longmeadow, Mass.) shot.

Bridgewater's best scoring opportunity came in the 56th minute off the foot of sophomore midfielder Amanda Leite (New Bedford, Mass.).  Leite's shot from the left side was turned aside by freshman goaltender Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Mass.) who made a leaping save to preserve her sixth shutout of the season.  Martin finished with four saves on the night.

Along with their decided advantage in shots, the Hawks also held a 10-3 edge in corner kicks.

In upcoming action, the Bears travel to Fitchburg State University on Saturday morning for ten o'clock MASCAC game with the Falcons.  The Hawks entertain Commonwealth Coast Conference rival Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon at 3:30.
