Gordon spoils Senior Night for Men’s Basketball

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – A second-half spurt helped push Gordon College past the Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team, as the Fighting Scots defeated the Hawks 70-59 Tuesday evening on Senior Night.

Prior to the start of the game, RWU senior quad-captain, Will Gerencer (Bowdoin, Maine) was honored for his contributions to the team over the past four years.

The Hawks took the first possession of the game on a heads-up steal by Ryan Palumbo (Warwick, R.I.) off the tip, but remained scoreless until Gerencer put up two after a minute and seven seconds of play. Gordon's Taylor Bajema (Whitinsville, Mass.) and Hans Miersma (Whitinsville, Mass.) both added two to the score while Jake LePrevost (Lee, Mass.) quickly answered with a three-pointer for the Hawks. At 17:31, the Hawks trailed by one.

Alex Barry (Brookfield, Conn.) gained back the lead for the Hawks with a three-pointer. Gordon took the lead back with a three from Sam Johnson (Chatham, Mass.). Roger Williams' Zac Campbell (Woodbridge, Conn.) added two more to the score to gain control and the lead for the remainder of the half (16-13).

Momentum shifted in favor of RWU at 9:09 when Campbell stole the ball which resulted in a 2-on-2 fast break with him and Andrew Wasik (Gainesville, Fla.) against two Gordon defenders. Wasik assisted Campbell for two points, increasing the Hawks lead to 20-15.

Gerencer later hit back-to-back three-pointers, contributing to a nine-point lead for the Hawks. At the end of the half, RWU led 32-27.

Gordon opened the second half with a 10-3 run, capped by a fast-break layup from Johnson to give the Scots a 37-35 lead. Gordon was able to build the lead to eight later in the half before the Hawks managed to pull within one. Palumbo put in a shot to make it 45-46 in favor of the visitos with eight minutes left in the game.

However, Gordon was able to keep the Hawks at bay for the remainder of the game, going back on top by eight with under three minutes to play and holding on for the 11-point win.

Alex Carnes (Phoenix, Ariz.) led Gordon with a game-high 20 points off the bench along with eight rebounds. Miersma finished with a double-double, going for 16 points, ten boards, and two blocks. Jason Dempsey (Wallingford, Conn.) added ten points and seven boards.

Palumbo led the Hawks with 14 points, five rebounds, and five steals, followed by Josh Syska (Peabody, Mass.) with ten. Trevor Fahmy (Bedford, N.H.) added six points and six rebounds.

Roger Williams (9-14, 8-9) travels to the University of New England for their last game of the regular season, while Gordon (14-9, 12-5 CCC) wraps up the year at home versus Eastern Nazarene, both games on Saturday.
