Wrestling takes Pilgrim League title with win over Johnson & Wales

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 18th-ranked Roger Williams University Wrestling team clinched its second straight Pilgrim League Championship with a 25-9 victory over 23rd-ranked Johnson & Wales University in front of a standing room only crowd in the Pilgrim League Championship match at the Wildcat Center on Friday evening.

JWU seniors Brandon O'Rourke (Cedar Grove, N.J.), Colby Clarke (Foster, R.I.), Joseph Negro (East Chester, N.Y.), George Madosky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Colin Lenhardt (Gloucester, Va.) were honored in a ceremony prior to the event.

The night got started at 157 pounds where Johnson & Wales sophomore Joey Gaccione (Highpoint, N.J.) bumped up a weight class to post a 5-0 victory against sophomore Francisco Colom (Ridgefield, N.J.) and give the Wildcats the 3-0 advantage. Sophomore Everet Desilets (Cranston, R.I.), also bumping up a weight class to 165 pounds, fell to senior Collin Crowell (Hampstead, N.H.), suffering his first loss of the season with a setback via pin fall in a time of 4:46 to give Roger Williams the 6-3 advantage.

The visiting Hawks pushed the lead to 9-3 with an 8-6 victory by sophomore Dan Ressler (Hillsdale, N.J.) at 174 pounds. At 184 pounds, sophomore David Welch (Salem, N.H.), the second ranked wrestler in his weight class in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, posted a 9-5 win to push the RWU advantage to 12-3. Roger Williams senior Shane Parcel (Pine Brook, N.J.) the No. 1 wrestler in New England at 197 pounds, posted a 3-0 win to give the Hawks the 15-3 lead midway through the contest. Johnson & Wales climbed back into the match with a thrilling 5-2 win by Madosky at heavyweight, knocking off the No. 5 wrestler in New England in freshman Kyle Foster (Somers, Conn.) to make the score 15-6.

Junior Anthony D'Anton (Toms River, N.J.) posted a 4-3 victory at 125 pounds for RWU to extend the lead to 18-6. Roger Williams clinched the victory with 4-1 win by Freshman Pat Lacroix (Salem, N.H.) at 133 pounds for the 21-6 advantage. JWU junior Michael Ferinde (Nutley, N.J.), the third-ranked wrestler in New England posted a 7-5 victory at 141 pounds, but it wouldn't be enough as freshman Danny Downes (Houston, Texas) wrapped up the evening with a 13-1 major decision win at 149 pounds to seal the victory for Roger Williams.

With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 18-5 in dual matches for the season and 3-1 in the Pilgrim League while Roger Williams improves to 19-1 for the year and a perfect 4-0 in the league. Both teams will return to action on Sunday, February 23rd at the New England Wrestling Association Futures Tournament, hosted by Roger Williams.
