Men’s Tennis wins 5-4 over Coast Guard in regular season finale

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team edged out a 5-4 victory over Coast Guard Academy Tuesday afternoon in the Hawks' last match of the regular season.

Roger Williams grabbed two of the three doubles for a 2-1 lead. Zack Bussiere (Colchester, Conn.) and Eric Laboissonniere (Cumberland, R.I.) took down Robert Renfrow and Alex Mead 8-6 at #2 doubles. Jonah Schwartz (Orange, Conn.) and Eric Bott (Bethel, Conn.) earned an 8-1 victory over Townsend Hirst and David Leemon. Coast Guard's Weston Fortna and Mark Guentert took the #1 doubles match 8-5 against Ryan Swanson (West Newbury, Mass.) and Taylor Webster (Bristol, Conn.).

The Bears earned wins at the top three spots in singles. Renfrow captured at 6-1, 6-1 victory over Bussiere at #1, while Guentert won 6-3, 6-0 against Laboissonniere. Fortnta earned the third win for Coast Guard at #3, beating Swanson 6-2, 6-1.

Yet the Hawks were able to claim spots four through six to come away with the win. Schwartz downed Mead 6-1, 6-2 at #4, while Andrew Amarone (North Haven, Conn.) won 6-3, 7-5 at#6. It would be Kyle Bull's (Pleasantville, N.Y.) three-set 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory at #5 against Lightner that would clinch the match for RWU.

Roger Williams ends the regular season at 13-4 and will enter the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament next week as the #2 seed.
