Field Hockey picks up 1-0 win over Fitchburg State

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team won its home opener for the second straight season with a 1-0 victory over Fitchburg State University Saturday evening.

The early part of the first half was characterized by strong contention on passing for both sides. Neither team was able to consistently get its offense going, as the two defenses were poking at passes up and down the field.

Stephanie Yaeger (Gansevoort, N.Y.) had a good look at a shot in the 14th minute, but got too much stick on the ball and hooked the shot wide left.

The Hawks continued to persevere, with their efforts paying off in the 21st minute. Meghan Curran (West Milford, N.J.) strolled down the left side, making her way towards the middle and finding the back of the goal with a shot inside the arc for a 1-0 RWU lead.

Fitchburg State put a scare into the Hawks at the end of the first half, getting two close calls in the final two minutes. The Falcons' Hannah Mason (Leominster, Mass.) notched a shot with just under two minutes left, but a kick save by Melora Lavoie (Poland, Maine) denied the score for the Falcons. In the final minute, Bailey Miller (Leominster, Mass.) had her shot blocked by a Hawk defender to keep the lead in favor of RWU.

In the second half, Fitchburg State kept up the offensive pressure on the Hawks throughout the period. The Falcons' best chance to score in the period came at the 64th minute, when Stephanie Stearns (Mystic, Conn.) had her shot hit off of the left post of the goal, just missing the game tying goal. The Hawks were able to maintain its defense and come away with the win.

Lavoie notched her second career shutout in the win, making five saves on the evening. Judith Valentin (Brockton, Mass.) had six saves for the Falcons in the loss.

Roger Williams (1-0) heads to Wesleyan on Tuesday for a 6:00 p.m. match, while Fitchburg State (0-1) goes to Johnson & Wales on Thursday.
