Volleyball claims Ocean State Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University won both its matches on the second day of the Ocean State Invitational, defeating Southern Vermont 3-0 and Wheaton 3-1.

In the Hawks' first match of the day against Southern Vermont, RWU utilized its depth to come away with a convincing win. The Hawks hit a season-high .361 in the match, while holding the Mountaineers to a .102 hitting percentage on the day. In addition, the Hawks' serving gave Southern Vermont trouble, with RWU tallying 17 service aces in the match, also a season-best.

Brittany McMullen (Lancaster, Pa.), Sarah McAniff (Redding, Conn.), Kristen Neff (Delmar, N.Y.), and Cassandra Minogue (Manorville, N.Y.) each led the Hawks with five kills each. Josalyn Benson (Phoenix, Ariz.) finished with 12 assists and five service aces, while Nicole Weber (Poulsbo, Wash.) handed out 11 assists of her own to go along with three aces.

For Southern Vermont, Katie Cerulo (Natick, Mass.) led the Mountaineers with seven kills, in addition to six digs. Alexandra Sinicropi (Fultonville, N.Y.) led the Mountaineers with nine digs, while Sheilani Kaleopa (Riverside, Calif.) stuffed the stat sheet with two kills, 14 assists, two aces, and four digs.

In the second match, the Hawks faced off against the Lyons of Wheaton, who gave RWU its toughest match of the weekend. The Hawks came out strong, taking the first two sets on the strength of strong hitting. The Hawks combined for 28 kills in the two wins while hitting .274 over the sets. However, Wheaton fought back in the third set, hitting .154 in the game while forcing the Hawks into 14 hitting errors and a -.128 hitting percentage. Yet in the third set, RWU was able to hold on for a hard-fought 25-15 win.

McMullen led RWU with 13 kills in the match, while Flaherty added 11. McAniff finished with six kills and 18 digs, while Benson had 37 assists. Batas also tallied 21 digs. For Wheaton Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, Calif.) finished with ten kills and 15 digs, with Caitlin Hellebrand  (Corona, Calif.) adding 13 assists. Olivia Wilson (Alameda, Calif.) contributed a team-high 17 digs.

Roger Williams (6-4) will host Wellesley next Saturday.
