Women’s Soccer beats cross-town rival Johnson & Wales

Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team easy its way to a 6-2 win over Johnson & Wales University at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex on Monday evening.

Johnson & Wales took the early 1-0 lead as freshman Taylor Hopkins (Warminster, Pa.) scored after a long crossing pass from sophomore Sarakate Matthews (Northborough, Mass.) at the 17:50 mark.  Roger Williams responded quickly, however and used five goals over a ten minute stretch midway through the stanza to make the score 5-1.  Junior Jessica Valenti (North Reading, Mass.) put the visiting Hawks on the board with a goal at the 20:56 mark.  Roger Williams would score what would prove to be the game-winner on a goal by Kristen Knight (Marion, Mass.) in the 26th minute.  Three goals by three different players in a three minute stretch, including a goal by freshman Kasey Provost (Peabody, Mass.) after a corner kick by sophomore Kristen Casey (East Longmeadow, Mass.) gave Roger Williams the 5-1 lead heading into halftime.

Roger Williams grabbed the 6-1 advantage just 1:19 into the second half on an unassisted goal by Casey.  The Wildcats would cut into the lead when freshman Kyra Selner (Sterling, Va.) fed a pass to freshman Gabriella Weithofer (East Longmeadow, Mass.) who slid a  shot into the lower right corner of the net to make the score 6-2 at the 63:13 mark. That would be all the scoring for the game, however as Roger Williams took the 6-2 victory.

Junior Alex Place (East Greenwich, R.I.) suffered the setback in goal for Johnson & Wales, making a pair of saves while Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) picked up the win with one save for Roger Williams.

With the loss JWU falls to 5-4 on the year while Roger Williams improves to 5-2-2 for the season.  The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, September 24th when they travel to Keene State for a non-conference contest at 6:30 p.m.
