Women’s Soccer powers in second half to win

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer teams made a second-half charge en route to a 3-0 win over Lasell College Wednesday afternoon.

On a hot, late summer afternoon, both teams faced humid and muggy conditions on Bayside Field. Both teams played to ball control early on, making passes around the pitch while the defense played containment around the ball.

As a result, offense was difficult to come by, as the first shot of the game did not come until the 14th minute. RWU's Jessica Valenti (North Reading, Mass.) tried to catch Lasell keeper Sarah LaClair (Belchertown, Mass.) off-guard with a deep shot from outside of the left side of the box. However, LaClair was able to get a read on the shot and punch the ball out of harm's way.

Lasell's best opportunity to score came in the 36th minute, as a through pass up the middle found its way to Bridget Lynch (Dover, N.H.), who outran  the Hawk defense for a one-on-one with Hawk goalie Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine). Lynch got a clean shot off right at Martin, who was able to make the easy save.

For both squads, offense was hard to come by, as the two teams combined for only five shots in the first half.

In the second half, the tempo picked up strongly in the Hawks favor, as Roger Williams had three shots and two corners in the first eight minutes of the period. Overall, the Hawks would outshoot the Lasers 15-0 in the half.

Roger Williams was finally able to break through in the 58th minute, with Kristen Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.) feeding Valenti a pass up the middle. Valenti converted the shot for her first goal of the season.

Calista Roll (Portland, Maine) added another score in the 74th minute. Kristen Casey (East Longmeadow, Mass.) served up a corner into the box to Kristen Knight (Marion, Mass.), who fired a shot on net, but was stopped by LaClair. Roll was able to knock in the loose ball off of the deflected save for her first goal of the year.

Roll picked up another goal in the closing minutes of the game, taking a pass from Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.) from across the box and kicking across her body. Her first attempt bounced off the post but she was able to knock the rebound in before the loose ball could be corralled.

Martin had two saves for the Hawks in her first collegiate shutout, while LeClair made eight saves on the afternoon in the loss.

Roger Williams (1-1-0) takes on St. Lawrence Friday in the Springfield Invitational, while Lasell (2-1-0) heads to Brandeis on Saturday.
