Field Hockey falls to reinstated Southern New Hampshire

Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern New Hampshire University opened up its first varsity season since 1981 with a 4-2 victory against the Roger Williams University Field Hockey team. SNHU now stands at 1-0, while Roger Williams falls to 1-2.

Penmen freshman Amaris Taylor (Tulsa, Okla.) led the way offensively, registering a goal and two assists in her first collegiate game. Junior Kaitlyn Ramsey (Warren, Mass.) also had a part in three of SNHU's scores as she handed out a trio of assists.

Sophomores Abby Treweek (Lakeville, Mass.) and Meghan Curran (West Milford, N.J.) each tallied a goal for the Hawks in the setback. Classmate Katherine Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn.) notched an assist, while sophomore goalkeeper Melora Lavoie (Poland, Maine) turned aside five shots.

Freshman Brianne Torre (Derry, N.H.) opened up the scoring late in the first half, picking up the Penmen's first goal in over three decades 28:46 into the contest off a feed from Ramsey. Roger Williams answered quickly, as Treweek found the back of the cage just 1:14 after Torre's tally. Taylor put SNHU back up by a goal in the closing minutes of the half, converting a Ramsey pass to make it a 2-1 at intermission.

The Penmen extended their lead just over three minutes into the second half when freshman Erin Frost (East Andover, N.H.) collected the first goal of her career. After Curran trimmed the lead to a single goal two minutes later, SNHU junior Austen Theroux (Goffstown, N.H.) put the game out of reach with her first of the year.

Goalkeeper Cassandra Nickerson played all 70 minutes in goal for the Penmen and stopped four of the six shots she faced. SNHU outshot the Hawks by a 15-12 margin and held a 13-11 edge in penalty corners.

The Penmen return to action on Saturday, September 13, as they welcome the LIU Post Pioneers to Larkin Field. Next up for Roger Williams will be a trip to Providence to face Johnson & Wales University.
