Field Hockey comes back to win over Johnson & Wales

Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team earned its second win of the season, defeating Johnson & Wales 5-3 in a non-conference contest at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales took the early lead when freshman Giovanna Ciavardoni (Latham, N.Y.) took a pass from fellow rookie Jessica Kocur (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and put in a shot from 10 yards out at the 9:03 mark.  The Wildcats increased their lead to 2-0 in the 14th minute after Ciavardoni sent a centering pass to senior Courtney McTeague (Saugus, Mass.) who put in a shot from five yards out.  JWU continued to impress offensively as freshman Katarina Brunette (Cohoes, N.Y.) tallied her first collegiate goal, again with an assist to Ciavardoni at the 18:10 mark for the 3-0 advantage.  Roger Williams was able to get on the board just over a minute later as Stephanie Yaeger (Ganesvoort, N.Y.) put in a rebounded shot to make the score 3-1.  JWU took the two goal lead heading into halftime after an 11-10 advantage in shots for the stanza.

Roger Williams continued to cut into the lead in the 57th minute when sophomore Meghan Curran (West Milford, N.J.) sent a pass to fellow sophomore Abby Treweek (Lakeville, Mass.) who found the back of the net from five yards out.  The visiting Hawks then knotted the game at 3-3 as junior Kelly Keating (Darien, Conn.) put in her own rebounded shot at the 59:44 mark.  Yaeger gave Roger Williams what would prove to be the game-winning goat at the 62:46 mark as she lifted a shot over the keepers head to make it 4-3.  The Hawks capped off the scoring for the day with no time left on the clock when sophomore Nicole Angeley (Norwalk, Conn.) converted a pass from Treweek on a penalty corner en route to the 5-3 victory.

Freshman Shannon Yoder (Boyertown, Pa.) made 11 saves in the setback for Johnson & Wales while sophomore Melora Lavoie (Poland, Maine) notched five stops for Roger Williams in the victory.

With the loss Johnson & Wales is now 0-4 on the season while Roger Williams improves to 2-2 for the year.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, September 13th when they host Anna Maria in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at 11:30 a.m.
