Springfield bests Women’s Soccer in double OT

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team fell to Springfield College 2-1 in double overtime in the championship game of the Springfield College Invitational on Saturday night at Brock-Affleck.

A pair of goals from junior midfielder Brooke Hattinger (Weymouth, Mass.), including a game-winning free kick at the 7:31 mark of the second overtime period lifted the Springfield College.

With the win, the Pride improves to 2-0 on the season, while the Hawks even their record at 2-2 overall.

Roger Williams opened the scoring at the 27:17 mark of the first half, when Haley Carignan (Scarborough, Maine) got taken down inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick, in which Kristen Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.) finished off to give the Pride a 1-0 advantage.

Just 3:46 into the second half, a Roger Williams foul just outside the box set up a free kick, which Hattinger drove into the top-right corner of the net to even the score at one goal apiece.

With just 33 seconds left in regulation, Nicole Fowler (Maynard, Mass.) drove down the left side and drove a shot on the cage from just outside the box, that Roger Williams goalkeeper Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) made a diving save to keep the Pride at bay.

Just 1:56 into the first overtime period, Jessica Valenti (North Reading, Mass.) was given an opportunity to end the contest with a penalty kick, but missed her shot to the right, leaving the door open for Hattinger and the Pride in the late stages of the contest.

The Pride will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m. when it will take on cross-town rival Western New England.
