Volleyball sweeps second day of Endicott Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball brought home two victories on the second day of the Endicott Invitational in Beverly, Mass. The Hawks improved their overall record to 3-4 with wins over Babson College (25-21, 23-25, 25-21, and 25-21) and State University of New York - Canton, (25-19, 27-29, 26-24, 22-25, 15-13).

In the morning contest versus Babson, the Hawks took the first set 25-21. The team traded points throughout the first half with RWU creating a four point advantage at 13-9. The Hawks would never trail from that point on and closed out the set.

In the second set the Beavers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead but the Hawks would level the score at 8-8. The Beavers continued to put short streaks together to gain a four point advantage at 17-13 that would propel them to a 25-23 win that evened the sets to one a piece.

The third set followed a similar pattern with each team scoring a few points and dropping a few points. However, the determined Hawks pushed through in the last few serves, giving them the next set win, (25-21).

The Hawks closed out the match never trailing in the fourth game that concluded at 25-21.

The team hit a .211, with Elizabeth Flaherty (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) and Kristen Boyer (Ephrata, Pa.) producing 14 kills. Brittany McMullen (Lancaster, Pa.) played a successful game with 13 kills, 22 attacks, and an attack average of .591.

In the afternoon game versus Canton, the Hawks scored the first 6 points and were never threatened in the first game that ended at 25-19.  The second set was a back and forth until the Kangaroos capitalized on an RWU attack error to square the game at 24-24.  Canton would collect the next two kills to close out the game at 26-24.

The Kangaroos capitalized on their second set victory to take a 22-17 lead in third game.  A series of strong servers closed the gap for the Hawks and eventually put them over the top for a 26-24 win.

The Kangaroos gained momentum in the fourth with a seven point lead that put the score at 18-11.  The Hawks would claw their way back into the set forcing a Canton time out at 19-20. Canton would score out of the time-out and hold on for the 25-22 win.

Canton would make the first run in the deciding fifth set spreading the score to 8-5 forcing an RWU time-out as the teams' switched sides.  The Hawks scored four unanswered points to take the lead 9-8 and Canton took a time-out.    The Hawks would not trail again in the final set with score ending 15-13 and improving to 3-4 overall on the season.

Boyer and Flaherty led the Hawks 16 kills and 20 kills respectively accounting for more than half of the team offensive production.

The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball will be back in action to host Colby-Sawyer on Friday September 12th, at 7:00 pm against in Bristol, R.I. in the Main Gym of the Recreational Center on the RWU Campus.
