Men’s Basketball bounced by Western New England

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team faltered in its third straight contest, as Western New England University earned a 66-44 road win over RWU Thursday evening. Both teams move to 7-11 overall and 5-6 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.

Roger Williams opened the game with a 5-0 lead, thanks to a layup by Jaylen Jennings (Norwalk, Conn.) and a three-pointer by Josh McCourt (Lincoln, R.I.). However, the Golden Bears answered with seven straight points, capped by a Musa Elsir (Springfield, Mass.) trey to put Western New England up by two.

Both teams traded baskets back and forth before Zack Askew (Middletown, Conn.) converted on a three-point play to give the Golden Bears a 12-10 lead. His points would help jump-start a 13-2 run to build WNE's advantage to ten.

The Hawks managed to cut into the deficit, with McCourt laying in a shot to make it a 22-27 game, with 1:44 left in the half, but the Golden Bears closed out the period with six straight points to go into halftime up 33-22.

In the second half, Western New England maintained its double-digit advantage for most of the period. The Hawks briefly brought the game back within single digits, with a three-pointer by Conor O'Brien (Sharon, Mass.) pulling RWU within eight (34-42) with 14:37 to play.

Yet the Golden Bears countered with eight straight points in just over a minute to double their advantage. From there, the Hawks never came closer than 12 with Western New England holding on for the win.

Mike Gelineau (Waltham, Mass.) led the Golden Bears with a double-double, going for 22 points and ten rebounds. Elsir added 15 points and five rebounds, while Nick DeFeo (Southington, Conn.) finished with 12 points, five boards, and four assists.

Jennings led the Hawks with 12 points and eight rebounds. O'Brien finished with five points and six boards off the bench, while Ryan Palumbo (Warwick, R.I.) added six points, three boards, and three assists.

On Saturday, Roger Williams heads to Nichols, while Western New England hosts Curry.
