Women's Soccer grounds Seahawks

Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team earned its tenth shutout of the season, picking up a 2-0 win over Salve Regina University Saturday afternoon.

Roger Williams now owns a 21-6-5 record in the all-time series and has not lost since 2009. The Hawks have won four of the last five Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) championships in women's soccer.

After a scoreless first half with Roger Williams outshooting the home team, 7-3, the Hawks became more aggressive in the second half with an 11-2 edge in shots.

Roger Williams senior Haley Carignan (Scarborough, Maine) scored her fourth goal of the season, a game-winner, at 52:55. Jessica Valenti (North Reading, Mass.) also scored her fourth goal of the season, which ties her with Carignan and Jenna Hart (Cheshire, Conn.) for team lead.

Roger Williams had eight corner kicks to just one for Salve Regina. The Hawks also outshot the Seahawks, 18-5.

Morgan McBrier (No. Kingstown, R.I.) made her first start in a Seahawk uniform and made nine saves.    Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.) made her third start of the season for the Hawks and improved to 3-0-0 with two saves on the day.

Roger Williams has allowed just one goal in five conference games (4-0-1), but has only scored seven times against CCC opponents.

"I am so impressed every time I watch my team play soccer," said Head Coach Tim Moody. It is the beautiful game. Our passing and moving at times is sublime. When we play one and two touch we are on a different planet to some teams. We exploded today with goals, no more winning games one nothing, one zero, one nil. We have made progress with continued effort on the practice field,  a great work ethic and hustle to win the ball back all over pitch, allowing our opponents few options. The win was the result we fully deserved. We played well on both sides of the half. The goals came at the right time. If you bounce the ball off both posts, you are showing your intent to hit the target to score goals and win games."

"The conditions were a little tricky from all the rain last night, we had a few players slip and fall over, but just because they were trying to play at the tempo we can and expect to play our game. Once we came to terms with the conditions of the grass field we were able to get the ball down and play. I think we are actually a better grass team, even though we train and play on artificial turf every day. Salve have improved and are better than last year and with it being an in state rival as well as a conference game it was never going to be a walk in the park. But we kept with the game plan and it all worked out in the end."

"Three points are very important and every conference win moves you closer to your goal. You want to keep winning, moving forward and being in control of your own destiny. Again, it is better to be near the top than having to chase and ask fellow members to win games for you. The conference is much tougher than most people think. There is no easy game anymore or a day when you can switch off and not be at your best. If you do that, you won't get what you are looking for and you get punished. We have put ourselves in a good position but the job is not done. You need to take one game at a time and focus all your skills on the game you are playing, that time, that moment, be in the moment, do what is right or needed. Don't take you eye off the prize."

"We have been on a pretty impressive roll and streak these past 6 weeks and the finish line is in sight. Not many teams in the country are doing what we are doing, and it is important to believe it will continue. But I tell my players every time we step on the pitch we need to prove to the doubters, the fans and the other team that we can play. We can play very well and we are going to show you that today, tonight or whenever the official blows the whistle we are up to the challenge. Bring it on, we have our standards, we have raised the bar and our biggest competition is ourselves. We can only be as good or go as far as our talents will take us. So step on the field and produce, make it worth it…"

Salve Regina (5-8-0, 1-4-0 CCC) will host Coast Guard, Thursday, October 15 at 4 p.m., while Roger Williams (10-0-3, 4-0-1 CCC) travels to WPI tomorrow at  12 p.m.
