Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team won its final home game of the regular season, defeating Gordon College 5-0 Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the game, the Hawks recognized its five seniors,
Haley Carignan (Scarborough, Maine),
Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.),
Jessica Valenti (North Reading, Mass.),
Taylor Provost (Peabody, Mass.), and
Carla Salcedo (Mexico City, Mexico) for their dedication to the program.
The Hawks had its offense working in the early part of the game, putting up four shots in the first 14 minutes of action. The fourth shot was the charm for RWU, with Kaiser scoring off of a long pass from Provost. Kaiser chipped a short shot over the goalie for her tenth goal of the season.
RWU nearly added another score in the 17th minute, when
Kristen Casey (East Longmeadow, Mass.) launched a free kick from about 60' from the right side. Her shot sailed over everyone and hooked it into the left corner, but unfortunately for RWU, an offsides call was made against the Hawks.
Roger Williams got a second chance in the 27th minute and made the most of the opportunity.
Samantha Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) sent a short pass to Carignan in the middle of the box. Carignan held off the defender and got off a shot into the left corner to make it a 2-0 Hawk lead.
Provost picked up the third goal of the half for RWU, bending in a corner kick inside the goal in the final minute of the first half.
It did not take long in the second half for Kaiser to come through with her second score of the game.
Missy Andrade (Glastonbury, Conn.) sent a pass up the middle to Kaiser, who caught up to the ball and knocked a shot into the right corner to make it a four-goal lead for RWU.
Valenti got in on the scoring action in the 65th minute. Kaiser came down the field, making her way down the right before sending a touch pass to the left to Valenti, who put away the shot into the back of the net.
Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) picked up the win for RWU, needing only one save in the first half for the Hawks.
Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.) had eight saves in the second for RWU. McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.) made eigth saves for the Fighting Scots in the loss.
"It was a 5 star performance today," said Head Coach
Tim Moody. "We came flying out of the blocks and never looked back. Homecoming weekend is always really special. The Alumni are on campus early to play a game on our beautiful turf soccer pitch in the morning and then the parents are arriving to cheer on the Seniors for their last regular home game of the season. It could not have gone any better had we written the script before we kicked off. The only down side was that Carla is still injured. Had she been on the pitch I would have fancied her to score a goal as well, just like the other 4 seniors did today, that was amazing! The last few years, our effort and energy for senior games goes off the charts. There is something in the air, the crowd is buzzing, excited and no one on the team wanted to disappoint the fans or play below par on this important day."
"Our main goal every time we step on the pitch is to control the controllables, stick to the game plan and see where it takes us as a team. We focus on certain things in practice and expect are players to go out and apply those points of focus to the match. We try to reinforce good habits that will make us an effective and efficient unit that puts us in a position to achieve our desired goals and outcomes at the end of the game. We work very hard at practice all week to show what we are made of on the Saturday. The fans are here to see a great performance and be entertained. We can play very good soccer and are a joy to watch, we were breathtaking at times today!"
"We are usually very good at home and today that was very apparent. We scored 5 very good goals, and perhaps 10 would not have flattered the scoreboard, we hit the post in the first half, a good goal disallowed from a free kick and then a crossbar in the 2nd half. We can easily say it was without question our best team performance of the season. Every player played at a very high level and showed the skills they possess, decision-making was on point and we executed the game plan to near perfection."
"Our experience we have gained over the last few years is there to be seen by all. High work rate with and with out the ball plus the pressing on defense we are using to win games is coming to the forefront in what we do. The conditions were perfect to play soccer today, it was cold, cloudy, no wind and the result was plenty of happy faces on the Hawks side of the spectator area. The seniors today have given everything for this team and to the program since they arrived on campus. They have grown with the program and helped make it what it is today. We are a force and a force that has awakened to take on the best in the region. We have established a top 25 national program here at RWU and we want to compete with the best programs in the country every season! We recruit the best players who have a desire to get better, who enjoy going to class to get good grades, players who engage in the community and do service for others."
"This season has been very special so far…Energy and enthusiasm in practice over the last few days transferred to the pitch. That passion is contagious, the team chemistry is awesome and this has given us that drive to get past the finish line. We go out and attack teams but remember how important keeping a clean sheet is rather than defending first and hope to sneak a goal or win in overtime or PK's! Our form is and has been improving from day to day, week to week and month to month!"
"It is too bad that the end of the season is almost here and we only play 3 or 4 months out of the year. Every year we are rebuilding, however we are very fortunate now that we are able to reload with quality players due to our results, playing for conference championships and in the NCAA National Tournament. We work very hard to identify and recruit the right players to fit our program. The success over the last few years has put us on the map and we plan to stay."
Roger Williams (15-0-3, 7-0-1 CCC) ends the regular season Wednesday at the University of New England, while Gordon (5-7-3, 3-4-1 CCC) heads to Endicott on Tuesday.
