Women’s Soccer keeps Western New England off scoreboard in win

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Western New England dropped a 1-0 decision against visiting the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team Saturday (Oct. 3) at rainy Suprenant Field.

The turning point for the Golden Bears came in the 42nd minute, when the team allowed an own goal to give the Hawks the 1-0 lead.

That would be the only goal scored in the contest, as Roger Williams held on for the win.

Despite being out-shot by a 22-3 margin, the Golden Bears had a strong defensive effort against the conference co-leaders thanks to a terrific performance by goalkeeper Briana Kubik who compiled 11 saves.

Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.) stopped the only shot she faced on goal for the Hawks.

"We were awesome today," said Head Coach Tim Moody. "Playing on the grass, the weather conditions actually helped us. We could not have been in control of the game any more than we were, it was an outstanding performance, we used our skills, our experience to dictate the play and win the game! There was really only one team that was going to win the game today and that was us, the Hawks. Very few teams can pass and possess like we can and that allowed us to get into very dangerous positions."

"Everyone on this team understands what our goal is and wants to contribute to that success. We are very much a team, we play together, we don't just rely on one person. Everyone gets to touch the ball when we attack. On another day perhaps we score the four or five we really deserved. However, one nil wins the game, we get the shutout which is important and luckily we didn't pick up any major injuries."

"We also managed to survive the game, it was a very physical encounter, not for the faint harted, that is what you get at college, soccer is a contact sport, it is played by adults for 90 minutes. You have to grow up very quickly and adjust to the power and pace of the game or it will pass you by in a flash. Our younger, newer players are just beginning to understand that, adjust to it and make an impact like we believed they could on a competitive program like RWU."

"Saying that the leadership and experience of the upperclassmen is why we have done so well and the record we have achieved so far this season. They should not be fazed by the competition and are learning to embrace these challenges in every game we play this fall. We always find a way to score and that is what makes us a difficult team to play and beat. We don't take anyone for granted and give everyone the respect they deserve. That is why we all love this sport and play soccer, you have to prove you are a good team every time your step on the field it is 11v11. That is why you play the game."

"However, the most important thing today was to win, get the three points and move on! Two wins in two days, 2 clean sheets, and live to play another game on Wednesday. That should help our rankings regionally and nationally. It is a great feeling to be a member of a winning program and pretty cool that we are one of only 1 of 14 teams who are undefeated across the country and have the 2nd best record in New England. Who knows how long that will last…"

Roger Williams remains unbeaten with an 8-0-3 record and 3-0-1 conference mark. Western New England is now 2-8-2 and 1-2-1 in CCC play.
