Roger Williams wasted little time scoring the first goal of the game, taking a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.
Jessica Valenti (North Reading, Mass.) found
Jodie Lavigne (Los Angeles, Calif.) on the left just outside of the penalty area. She would then send a crossing kick into the air just over an Endicott defender and to a waiting
Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.). Kaiser secured possession and sent a high shot top shelf to the net for a quick Roger Williams lead.
The RWU defense played strong throughout the half, but Endicott came close to taking advantage of a slight lapse to tie the game halfway into the period. In the 25th minute, Paige Marinelli (Burlington, Conn.) got possession of the ball on the left side and brought it into the box. She kicked a high chip pass to Sharlotte Pernice (West Springfield, Mass.), who had a clear shot on net but sent it just a bit too high over the net.
Endicott's perseverance paid off in the 54th minute, as Pernice managed to score the equalizer. Ashley Mueskes (Georgetown, Mass.) kicked a corner kick towards the back side of the goal that the Hawk defense could not quite clear. The ball found its way to Pernice, who hooked a shot the other way into the left corner to tie the game at one.
The Gulls nearly grabbed the lead in the 64th minute. Pernice beat a Hawk defender to the ball and brought it down the right sideline. She launched a long cross to a streaking Marinelli, who had an open look on the left side of the net, but pushed the shot just a bit wide. EC missed another opportunity eight minutes later when Brady Sezon (Easton, Conn.) took a pass just onsides in the box and bent a wide-open shot too far left of the goal.
The last close call for the Gulls came with less than ten seconds remaining. A stopped-clock free kick into the box sailed over the head of RWU keeper
Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) in the box, but Endicott was unable to get a foot on the loose ball, sending the game to overtime.
Both teams appeared to be headed to a second overtime before Kaiser logged the golden goal with just over a minute remaining.
Paige Byrne (Clifton Park, N.Y.) sent a deep ball down the right side, which Kaiser was able to outrun the defense and get to the ball. She brought into the box and hooked in a shot to the left corner to give RWU the win.
Martin made three saves for RWU in the win, while Caroline Armbruster (Stowe, Vt.) also stopped three shots in the hard-luck loss.
