Men’s Basketball rolls to win on Senior Day

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team won its regular season finale 71-49 over the University of New England Saturday afternoon on the program's Senior Day.

Playing in their final regular season home game, seniors Alex Barry (Brookfield, Conn.), Joseph Henry (Medway, Mass.), and Ryan Palumbo (Warwick, R.I.) were honored at the beginning of the contest for their dedication to the RWU Men's Basketball program.

The game started off as a back-and-forth affair. Evrim Ozkan (Istanbul, Turkey) laid in an easy two to start the game before Henry knocked down a three for the Hawks. The two teams traded baskets early on before the Hawks began to pull away. Trailing 10-11, Roger Williams went on a 14-2 run, capped off by a putback by Trevor Fahmy (Bedford, N.H.) to give RWU a 24-13 lead.

Despite the double-digit deficit, the Nor'Easters would not be deterred, as they responded with a 12-2 run of their own, with Sam Thomas' (Bedford, N.H.) tip-in bringing UNE back within one (25-26). Yet another run in the Hawks' favor build the lead back up, with RWU scoring ten of the final 12 points of the period to take a 36-27 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Roger Williams kept the University of New England at bay, not allowing the Nor'Easters to come closer than eight. Andrew Wasik (Gainesville, Fla.) buried a trey with 13:07 to give RWU its largest lead to that point, a 14-point advantage (46-32). RWU would later build that lead to 21 on Fahmy's tip-in with 6:24 to play.

Proficient shooting helped the Hawks throughout the game, as the team shot a season-best .538 (28-for-52) from the field, including a blistering 12-of-24 (.500) from behind the arc, also a season best.

Wasik led Roger Williams with 17 points and five assists, while Palumbo finished with 14 points and five assists of his own along with four steals. Josh Syska (Peabody, Mass.) added 12 points and seven rebounds. The seniors Barry and Henry combined for six points, one rebound, and one steal.

Devin Thompson (Winthrop, Mass.) led UNE with 14 points and three assists. CJ Autry (Standish, Maine) added five points and seven boards, while Gavin Dibble (East Marion, N.Y.) finished with eight points and two assists.

Roger Williams (9-16, 7-11 CCC) will enter the Commonwealth Coast Conference at the #6 seed and will face #3 Eastern Nazarene Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. The University of New England ends its season at 7-18 overall.
