Vassar sets down Men’s Soccer

Box Score 1 BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team suffered a 5-1 setback against Vassar College in the second day of the Roger Williams University Squad Locker Classic. In the second game of the classic, Salve Regina University held off Fitchburg State University 4-3.

Roger Williams came close to putting the first goal of the game early into the contest. Rowan Hallahan (Califon, N.J.) had the ball on the left side of the box and put a shot on target but had it blocked by a Brewer defender.

Vassar then came down the other end and capitalized on a header from Jordan Palmer (Woodland Hills, Calif.) in the third minute. Palmer was able to find the back of the net and give Vassar a 1-0 lead.

James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.) had another opportunity for RWU as well in the fourth minute, beating a Brewer defender down the left side. However, a heads-up play by Nick Hess denied Sheldon as he drove in front of the shot and deflected it away from net.

Vassar tacked on another goal two minutes in the second half. Noah Snider (Laramie, Wyo.) sent a short pass down the left side to Gavin Jennings (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). Jennings kicked a long shot into the right corner to take a 2-0 lead.

The Hawks broke through in the 61st minute, when Sheldon knocked it a deflected ball out of the air off of a John McCarthy (Torrington, Conn.) header to bring RWU within one.

The one-goal deficit didn't last long for Roger Williams; Vassar responded with a pair of goals. Tom Wiechert (Dana Point, Calif.) knocked in a shot off of a deflected shot in the 64th minute. Then Tyler Gilmore (Coronado, Calif.) knocked home a one-timer off of a pass from Wiechert off of a corner kick in the 76th minute for a 4-1 Brewer lead.

Wiechert tallied the final score of the contest with four minutes left, taking a nice reverse pass from Elias Kim (Merrimack, N.H.) and knocking in a shot for the fifth goal of the game.

Sebastien Lasseur (Cornwall, Conn.) picked up the win, making four saves on the day, while Carsten Fredrickson (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) stopped five shots in his first loss of the year.

In the second game of the day, Richie Finizio (Fort Lee, N.J.) scored the first goal of the day for Salve Regina in the third minute. Matthew O'Donnell found Finizio in the box off of a corner kick by Evan Dudney (North Andover, Mass.).

Dudney stepped up in the 12th minute with a goal of his own. Nolan Brady (Needham, Mass.) split three Fitchburg defenders with a pass to find Dudney up the middle. Dudney then beat the Fitchburg keeper to put the Seahawks up by two.

Brady then put Salve Regina up 3-0 in the 17th minute with a shot that bounced off of the left post and just rolled inside the line.

Salve appeared to be headed towards an easy win, but Fitchburg State had other plans. Jared Burns (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) scored a pair of goals to pull the Falcons within one before the end of the half. His first came in the 23rd minute on a long shot outside the top of the box. He would follow that up with another goal in the 33rd minute, maneuvering around a Salve defender and the Seahawk keeper to score.

Salve almost had another goal from Mark Marino (Smithfield, R.I.) in the final minute, but was called offsides, keeping the Seahawk lead at one.

In the 61st minute, Dudney built the Salve lead back up to two with his second goal of the game. Finizio corralled a loose ball at the top of the box and sent a pass to his right to an open Dudney, who converted the shot.

The Falcons managed to come back within one eight minutes later. Burns sent a crossing pass to the middle to Matthew Beauregard (Charlton, Mass.), who buried the shot to the right side.

That would be the final tally of the game for both sides, as Salve held on for the win.

Michael Payan (Fort Lee, N.J.) earned the win, making four saves for Salve Regina, while Alex Al-Zaibak (Hingham, Mass.) made five stops in the loss.
