Wesleyan grabs win over Field Hockey

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - Wesleyan University handed the Roger Williams University Field Hockey team its first home loss of the season, taking down the Hawks Tuesday evening by a 3-1 score.

Wesleyan grabbed an early 1-0 lead shortly into the contest. Brooke Hodgson (Guilford, Conn.) brought the ball into the arc to the left, knocking in a shot to the right side of the goal to give the Cardinals the advantage.

The Hawks nearly had a chance to tie the game in the seventh minute, as Katherine Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn.) fed Elizabeth Whitney (Norwalk, Conn.) pass to the left side of the goal and left her one-on-one with the keeper. However, Whitney sailed her shot just wide of the goal.

However, RWU wasted little time capitalizing, getting the game-tying score less than a minute later. Taylor Powell (Windham, N.H.) sent a pass towards the right side of the goal, splitting Cardinal defenders to find Mahoney for the goal.

The Cardinals continued to stay aggressive offensively, ultimately regaining the lead in the 22nd minute. Caitlin Majewski (Southbury, Conn.) made a clean pass up the middle to Cici Frattasio (Walpole, Mass.). Frattasio then turned and fired a shot into the left corner to put Wesleyan back on top 2-1.

Roger Williams nearly tied the game with just under three minutes left in the half, as Juliana Miccile (Upton, Mass.) found herself on a breakaway with no defenders around her. However, Cardinal keeper Sara Grundy (Montpelier, Vt.) made a great kick stop on Miccile's attempt to preserve the lead.

The second half saw Wesleyan extend the advantage to two with a goal by Hannah Plappert (Newtown, Pa.). In the opening minute of the period, Plappert brought the ball down the left side and put in her first score of the season, making it a 3-1 game in favor of Wesleyan.

Wesleyan controlled the tempo the rest of the way, despite the Hawks' efforts to get on the board. Grundy made a number of crucial stops for the Cardinals in the second half to halt the Hawks' attempt to get back in the game.

Grundy finished with six saves and one goal allowed in the game, picking up her first win of the season. Melora Lavoie (Poland, Maine) suffered the loss, allowing two goals with three saves in the first half. Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.) played the second half, giving up one goal with four saves.

Roger Williams (1-2) heads to Framingham State on Thursday, while Wesleyan (1-0) hosts Babson on Friday.
