Box Score WENHAM, Mass. — The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team outscored Gordon College by 10 points in the second period after trailing at the break to take a season sweep of the Fighting Scots, 67-62.
The Fighting Scots continue their longest skid of the year, dropping their fourth consecutive contest. Gordon now sits at 7-10 overall and 4-6 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, which is good for seventh. The Hawks get to 6-4 in the CCC and 8-9 overall.
Gordon continued its strong showings out of the opening tip, grabbing a 10-4 lead just five minutes into the game. The Scots offense looked efficient in the early going with the home crowd on its side, but Roger Williams began to poke holes in the Gordon rhythm and tied the game at 14.
Once again, Gordon showed flashed on the offensive end with another length spurt to grow its lead to seven points approaching the five-minute mark. The Scots held that advantage for much of the final few minutes, but Roger Williams'
Nick Marini (Loudonville, N.Y.) laid in a ball before time expired in the half to make it a 29-24 game.
The Scots came out of the break flat, quickly giving up their lead in less than three minutes. Roger Williams freshman
Austin Coene (Tyngsboro, Mass.) had a stellar second half with 15 of his 22 points and went 6-of-7 from the floor to open up as large as a 10-point lead in the period.
Gordon's offense came back on over the final two minutes, but the Scots could not wipe away a tough 15 minutes of play.
Nine different Hawks scored in the contest. Coene fell just short of his career high with 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Marini also put up double-digits with 15 points and a team-high four assists.
Trevor Fahmy (Bedford, N.H.) led the team with eight boards.
The Scots are back in action on Wednesday when they head down the Mass Pike to take on Western New England. Roger Williams plays Salve Regina on Wednesday.
