Men’s Basketball collects win over Golden Bears

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team defeated Western New England with an 83-66 win over the Golden Bears late afternoon on Saturday in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.
 
Mike Gelineau (Waltham, Mass.) came out strong for Western New England with a dunk assisted by Daniel Silva (Seekonk, Mass.) 13 seconds into the game. However, the Hawks' Andrew Wasik (Gainesville, Fla.) later hit a three-point to help gain momentum for RWU and take the lead over the Golden Bears. His shot began a 10- run for the Hawks, helping RWU lead throughout the beginning of the first period.
 
However, Western New England managed to climb back in the game. The play moved forward with back and forth baskets. Keegan Dudeck (Longmeadow, Mass.) eventually gave WME the lead with a three-pointer at 3:34 to take a 33-32 advantage over the Hawks for the first time since the opening basket. The Hawks regained their lead at 2:36 with one free throw each by Jaylen Jennings (Norwalk, Conn.) and Trevor Fahmy (Bedford, N.H.). Roger Williams would eventually go into halftime with a 40-38 lead.
 
Gelineau led Western New England with 12 points and one rebound in the first half. Roger Williams' Wasik put up nine points, going 3-for-3 from behind the arc.
 
The Hawks dominated the second half of the game. Western New England started off the period with a jump shot by Zack Askew (Middletown, Conn.) at 18:33 to tie the game 40-40, but the Hawks quickly responded with a shot by Nick Marini (Loudonville, N.Y.) at 18:15 to take back the lead. The Hawks continued to hold the lead for the next few minutes. At 15:31, Josh McCourt (Lincoln, R.I.) furthered the lead with a three-point shot and a layup followed shortly at 15:02 to keep the Hawks up 51-44.
 
Free throw opportunities allowed for Western New England to stay within a five-point difference to the Hawks (48-53). The fired-up Hawks kept hitting shot after shot as they pushed to a double-digit lead brought by Josh McCourt's layup at 12:22.
 
Don Stephens (West Palm Beach, Fla.) brought the game to 57-68 with a three-pointer for Western New England. The Golden Bears pushed back against the strong Hawk offense, but continuously fell behind. A steal by Andre Joyner (Norwich, Conn.) at 7:47 gave the Golden Bears a chance to rally. At 6:50 a foul on Nick Marini allowed Luis Agrait (South Hadley, Mass.) to earn the Golden Bears another two points bringing them up 63-70.
 
The Hawks kept their stamina with under two minutes to go the Hawks led 79-66 at 1:54 after a good free throw attempt from Nick Marini. Western New England put up a fight but was no match in the end for the Hawks.
 
Wasik ended the game as top scorer for the Hawks with 18 points and four rebounds. McCourt was able to put up 14 points, while Marini and Jennings each scored 12 points.
 
Agrait led Western New England with 17 points, while. Gelineau scored 16 points for the Golden Bears. Askew (Middletown, Conn.) had a strong defensive game with 6 rebounds under the hoop.
 
Roger Williams (9-10, 7-5 CCC) will travel to Dudley to match up against Nichols College at 7:30pm. Western New England (6-13, 4-8 CCC) will travel to Boston to play Wentworth in the evening at 7:30pm.
