Springfield Spoils Regular Season Finale For Women’s Soccer

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team ended the regular season with a 3-0 non-conference loss against Springfield College Wednesday evening.

Springfield improves to 8-1-1 in the all-time series against Roger Williams. The Hawks' lone victory over Springfield was a 3-0 decision back in 2010.

Springfield needed little time to jump in front of the Hawks. In the opening minute, Mikaela Coady (Middletown, Conn.) grabbed possession of the ball on the left side and fired a shot into net for her seventh goal of the year and to put the Pride on top 1-0.

The early half of the period saw both teams struggle for offensive chances, as strong play at midfield and defense prevented either side from getting their offense in gear. Springfield had only three shots in the first 30 minutes of play, while the Hawks only logged two shots over the same stretch.

In the 40th minute, the Hawks had its best scoring chance of the half. Kasey Provost (Peabody, Mass.) had the ball on the left side and launched an airborne pass to a streaking Jenna Hart (Cheshire, Conn.) on the right. Unfortunately for RWU, her pass was just a bit too strong and sailed too far in front of Hart. The Pride would go into halftime with the one-goal advantage.

In the 49th minute, Springfield blew a great chance to double the lead, when Jenacee Bradbury (South Portland, Maine) sent a long pass to a wide-open Kim Quiles (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). Quiles was able to put one past the keeper, but bounced it off the post, allowing the Hawk defense to clear the ball.

The Pride would get that chance right back less than a minute later. Elise Leavitt (Stratham, N.H.) sent a long through ball across the box that somehow avoided all the Hawk defenders and found Mary Silva (Ludlow, Mass.). Sliva would put a shot into the left corner to give Springfield a 2-0 lead.

Springfield added one more in the 55th minute, with Gabrielle Fernandes (North Smithfield, R.I.) sticking a shot in the left corner for her first score of the season.

Ciara Boucher (Manchester, Conn.) stopped four shots for Springfield in 84:53 of action. Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.) had six saves for Roger Williams.

Roger Williams (10-7-2) will begin the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament Saturday against the #8 seed Gordon College at 11:00am. Springfield (9-4-3) concludes the regular season at Wellesley on Saturday as well.
