Women’s Soccer Upset By Gordon In CCC Quarterfinals

Box Score
BRISTOL, R.I. – The #8 seed Gordon College stunned the top-seeded Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team, pulling off a 2-1 upset win over Saturday afternoon in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Quarterfinals.

Despite being outshot 25-6 on the day, Gordon scored twice in the final five minutes to halt Roger Williams' bid for a third consecutive CCC Championship.

The early part of the game saw Roger Williams control the ball for a majority of the time, looking for the good chance to score. Gordon's defense did a good job keeping the Hawks from getting clear looks at the goal, but still had trouble not allowing shot for RWU.

Roger Williams outshot the Fighting Scots 7-0 over the first 20 minutes of play. RWU's best chance was a free kick by Kristen Casey (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) that was easily snagged by Kali Denty (Marshfield, Mass.).

Gordon nearly scored on their first shot of the game in the 26th minute. Jill Kefelas (Wenham, Mass.) brought the ball down the left side and found Lexi Potter (South Glen Falls, N.Y.) cutting to the middle of the box. Potter got the ball and got shot off but was denied on a great sliding save by Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine).

Roger Williams came close to putting the first score on the board in the 37th minute. Ericca Broderick (Great Barrington, Mass.) sent a long pass to the middle of the box to Kasey Provost (Peabody, Mass.). Provost tried to one-time the ball into the right corner, but just sent it wide by a couple of feet.

Despite the Hawks holding a 15-1 advantage on shots in the first half, the game remained scoreless entering the second period.

Jenna Hart (Cheshire, Conn.) had a pair of good looks on goal in the beginning part of the second half. The first was a waist-high kick from the left side of the box off of a free kick in the 54th minute. Then she followed that with a twisting shot from five yards out on the right side four minutes left. Fortunately for Gordon, both of her attempts would be turned away by Denty.

Roger Williams' perseverance finally paid off in the 63rd minute. Hart found Alli Santacroce (Burlington, Conn.) on the right side for a shot attempt. Santacroce put her attempt just a bit high but caught a fortunate bounce off the underside of the crossbar. The ball would trickle backwards and just cross the goal line, putting RWU up 1-0.

Raleigh LeMiere-Barnes (Los Angeles, Calif.) almost added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute. Broderick fed her a leading pass, allowing her a one-on-one chance with the goalie. However, LeMiere-Barnes waited just a bit too long to get a shot off, allowing Denty to get in position to make a save.

Then in the 85th minute, a questionable yellow card on the Hawks led to a free kick for the Fighting Scots. Kay Silveira (Bristol, R.I.) stepped up and booted a long kick on target to the goal. Martin managed to backpedal, leap, and get both hands on the ball, but it just slipped out of her hands and trickle in to tie the game at one apiece.

Then a minute later, Gordon's Tori Caswell (Uxbridge, Mass.) launched a long cross-field pass to an open Kefalas on the left side. Kefalas would bring the ball into the box and slot a goal in the right corner to swing the game completely in Gordon's favor.

The Hawks tried to rally in the final three minutes of play, but could not get a shot off. An offsides call with just under two minutes remaining erased RWU's best chance at sending the game to overtime, allowing Gordon to pull off the upset.

Denty finished the day with 12 saves, while Martin had two stops for RWU.

On Tuesday, Gordon (7-9-2) will travel to the winner of the #4 University of New England/#5 Curry quarterfinal matchup. Roger Williams closes out the year at 10-8-2.
