Women's Soccer Rolls To Win Over WNE

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team rolled off its sixth straight win Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over Western New England University.

Western New England came close to notching the first score of the game in the seventh minute. Brooke Labrie (Granby, Mass.) sent a pass to her right to Christina Delude (Belchertown, Mass.), who brought the ball into the box. She fired a long shot that just glanced off the upper right corner of the post, missing a score by less than a couple of feet.

The Hawks' first chance to score came in the 15th minute, with Missy Andrade (Glastonbury, Conn.) booting a pass down midfield to Kylie Casey (E. Longmeadow, Mass.). Casey would put up a shot but hook it just wide left.

Their second chance would be the one that they capitalized on. Kristen Casey (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) served up a free kick deep into the box which took a high bounce and found the head of Jenna Hart (Cheshire, Conn.). She would head it backwards to the left corner of the net for the first goal of the game.

Western New England got unlucky in the 36th minute, with Gabrielle Delos (Chepachet, R.I.) getting a good look at a shot on net in a busy box. Unfortunately for her, one of her Golden Bear teammates would cross in front of her as she put up the shot, causing the shot to glance off the teammate and away from the net.

Roger Williams took its 1-0 lead into the second half and almost added to it shortly into the period. Raleigh LeMiere-Barnes (Los Angeles, Calif.) put up a corner kick to the back side of the net to Samantha Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) Woznicki got a header off but was denied on a nice jumping save by Golden Bear keeper Marissa Veilleux (Newington, Conn.).

The Hawks would later add to their lead in the 55th minute. LeMiere-Barnes grabbed possession of the ball and launched a long shot from about five yards from outside the top of the penalty area. Her shot would bend into the left side of the goal to put RWU on top 2-0.

In the 77th minute, Roger Williams tallied another goal on the scoreboard. LeMiere-Barnes tapped a pass from the right side of the field to the middle to an open Morgan Snow (Rowley, Mass.). With no one around her, she kicked a shot into the left corner of the net for her first collegiate goal.

With 57 seconds left to play, RWU added its final score of the game. Ericca Broderick (Great Barrington, Mass.) went coast-to-coast with the ball, making her way around the Golden Bear defense and making her way into the box. She would slip a shot past Veilleux to send the Hawks home with the 4-0 win.

Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) picked up her first win of the season, making three saves in 83:40 of action. Veilleux had seven saves for Western New England in the loss.

Roger Williams (6-5-2, 3-0-2 CCC) will be back in action tomorrow, as the Hawks host WPI at 1:00 pm. Western New England (5-8-1, 2-3-0 CCC) hosts Westfield State on Wednesday.
