Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball made their mark in their home opener against Newbury with a 101-70 win Friday evening.
The Hawks were almost even with 51 points in the first half and 50 points in the 2
nd half. Newbury struggled only getting 26 points in the 1
st half.
Junior
Conor O'Brien (Sharon, Mass.) tipped the ball to
Josh Syska (Peabody, Mass.) for possession to start the Hawks off on a good foot. Roger Williams quickly put up the first point on the foul line. Newbury got possession and immediately turned the ball over back to the Hawks. With positive momentum the Hawks made two consecutive layups to lead early on. RWU's early run would be too much for Newbury to overcome. Roger Williams showed strong defense early on and were able to outrebound Newbury 25-14 in the first half.
Newbury played better on both sides of the ball in the 2
nd half, shooting 47.3 percent and forcing 12 Hawk turnovers. Yet the 25-point deficit was too much to overcome.
Dalton Prendergast (Bayport, N.Y.) led with RWU with 10 rebounds in addition to eight points. Syska contributed 11 points.
Nick Marini (Loudonville, N.Y.) also had 11 points and led the team's assists with six. The Hawks top scorer was
Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) with 22 points.
Newbury's top scorer was Daivon Edwards with 14 points. Ato Botsio finished with ten points and five assists.
Roger Williams now stands at 2-0, while Newbury falls to 0-2.
