Men’s Basketball Drops First Contest Of The Season

Box Score NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton College collected a 77-66 victory over the visiting Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team Tuesday night in Emerson Gymnasium.
 
Senior forward Quinton Dale earned his fourth double-double in as many games to lead the Lyons. Dale ended the night with a team-high 18 points, after finishing a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line and hitting 5-of-11 from the floor to include 2-3 from long range. The senior also led the Lyons (2-2) in rebounds with 10, while picking up a block and a steal. David Carbonello tallied 12 points in the win and junior Ryan Fogarty chipped in 11. Senior Timothy Berry contributed nine points and eight boards on the night, while junior Liam Bruno scored eight and first-year Alex DuBrow ended the night with seven.
 
Austin Coene of Roger Williams (3-1) led all players with 22 points with an 8-for-20 night from the floor, which included finishing 3-of-8 from three-point range, and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. Nick Marini and Josh Syska each ended the contest with 16 points, while Conor O'Brien led the team with 10 rebounds.
 
Dale started the game off with a three-pointer, which helped Wheaton take the early lead. The Lyons led the entire first half, capturing its largest lead of the game at 36-23 after DuBrow drained the second of his two free-throws. RWU answered with the final six points of the half to make it a 36-29 game at the intermission.
 
The second half turned into a battle with four tied and six lead changes. Back-to-back layups by O'Brien and Syska handed Roger Williams its first lead of the game with 12:31 left to play in regulation. Dale earned Wheaton the lead back for good with 4:02 to go with consecutive made free-throws. The Hawks did their best to fight back into the game, but were unable to overcome made free-throws by the Lyons. 
 
The Lyons shot just 37.5% (21-of56) from the floor, which included 39.1% (9-of-23) from three-point range. The Hawks however, were just 5-of-22 from long distance (22.7%), but held a slight advantage overall, finishing 26-of-69 (37.7%) from the field. Wheaton's biggest advantage came from the charity stripe, where they shot 83.9% (26-for-31), while Roger Williams shot 64.3% (9-of-14).
 
Wheaton returns to the court on Sunday, Nov. 27 for a 4 p.m. contest at Regis (Mass.). Roger Williams hosts Connecticut College Sunday, also at 4 p.m.
