Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team earned its first Commonwealth Coast Conference win of the season, defeating Curry College by a 113-66 margin Saturday afternoon.
The 113 points is the second-most points in program history since 1980. The Hawks posted 115 points in a 115-103 win against Johnson & Wales back in February of 1998.
Every player but one scored for Roger Williams in the game, with four Hawks in double digits including
Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) with 16,
Andrew Wasik (Gainesville, Fla.) and
Jaylen Jennings (Norwalk, Conn.) with 15, and
Jake Heaton (Shelton, Conn.) with 13.
Rich Pugliese (Middlebury, Conn.) and
Dawson Dickson (Manchester, N.H.) each posted eight points off the bench.
Jared Thorpe-Johnson (Dorchester, Mass.) led Curry with 11 points off the pine. Paul Preziosi (Quincy, Mass.) added ten points and four rebounds, while Jordan George-Belitti (Cambridge, Mass.) finished with five points and five boards.
An early run by Roger Williams put the Colonels in a hole they could not get out. Wasik broke a 1-1 tie with three consecutive treys to put the Hawks up by nine. Later,
Nick Marini (Loudonville, N.Y.) built the lead to 13 (20-7) with 13:09 with a layup in the paint.
The Hawk defense would hold Curry scoreless over the final five minutes of the first half. From there, the Hawks extended their lead from 16 to 35 with a 17-0 run to end the period and go into halftime with a 55-20 lead.
Curry shot better from the field in the second period, improving from 24.1 percent (7-of-24) to 42.9 percent (18-of-42). However, the 35-point deficit proved to be far too much to overcome.
Roger Williams (5-2, 1-1 CCC) will take on Salve Regina on the road Tuesday at 7:30 pm. Curry (0-6, 0-2 CCC) will search for its first win against Gordon, also on Tuesday at 7:30 pm.
