Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team held off a late run by Salve Regina University to come away with a 77-74 win Tuesday evening.
Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) led the Hawks with 18 points with six rebounds, while
Conor O'Brien (Sharon, Mass.) logged a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds.
Nick Marini (Loudonville, N.Y.) added 17 points and six assists, with
Andrew Wasik (Gainesville, Fla.) scored 16.
Salve held on to the lead throughout most of the first half. With nine minutes left in the first half, the Seahawks turned a 16-15 lead into a ten-point advantage with an 11-2 run over the following three minutes. The Hawks continued to climb their way back in the game, pulling to within three before the half (35-38).
In the second half, RWU managed to take its first lead of the game since the 11:29 mark in the first half. Marini dropped in a layup with 14:37 left in the game to put the Hawks up 45-43. From there, Roger Williams would maintain the lead throughout the remainder of the game, with their largest lead a 69-61 margin with just over three minutes left.
The Seahawks made one final run in the closing seconds, knocking down back-to-back treys to erase a seven-point hole and pull within two. Salve got the final possession trailing by only three but was unable to get a shot off as RWU escaped with the win.
