Men’s Basketball held off on Senior Day

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team was defeated by the University of New England Nor'easters 62-48 on Senior Day Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference competition.

RWU honored the three seniors, Trevor Fahmy (Bedford, N.H.), Leonardo Atkinson (Nantucket, Mass.), and Josh McCourt (Lincoln, R.I.) prior to the game for their contributions to the program.

Roger Williams started off the first half by winning the tip-off, but were unable to put the points up to match their offensive effort. It was the Nor'easters who got the first points of the game with a shot made by Tom Nason (Milton, N.H.) at 18:29. Josh Syska's (Peabody, Mass.) shot at 16:26 got the Hawks on the board after a scoreless first three and a half minutes for the Hawks.

Josh McCourt (Lincoln, R.I.) strengthened the Hawks with a shot made at 12:22 and another just 30 seconds after to bring the Hawks score up 8-11. Racing the shot clock, Dawson Dickson (Manchester, N.H.) made a three right as the buzzer sounded to bring the Hawks trailing by two 11-13 at 11:03.

Gavin Dibble's (Greenport, N.Y.) shot at 10:33 began a ten-point run for the Nor'easters, helping University of New England pull away from the Hawks. The Hawks, not scoring for almost ten minutes, were able to gain a point from a free throw at 1:16 making the score 12-25.

Under a minute left in the half, Andrew Wasik (Gainesville, Fla.) made the last basket for the Hawks at 0:59.  University of New England Devin Thompson (Winthrop, Mass.) made up the points with a layup at 0:33. Neither team made a basket in the final 30 seconds, and at the end of the first half, the score read 27-14 Nor'easters.

UNE began the second half of the game with Thompson's three-pointer at 19:35. The Hawks had a slow start until Austin Coene's (Tyngsborough, Mass.) shot at 17:45 to make the score 32-17. His shot began a ten-point run for the Hawks. At 13:30, Blake Swanson's (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) shot broke the run with the score now 34-27.

Back and forth baskets persisted as the clock counted down. Trevor Fahmy (Bedford, N.H.) with a layup at 11:30 had the Hawks trailing just by two 34-36.  Dickson took the lead for the Hawks 37-36 for the first time at 9:33 with a three-point shot.

The tide turned when the University of New England responded with a 14-2 run starting with Thompson's three-pointer at 9:24. UNE would take a 50-36 lead that proved hard for the Hawks to overcome.

Fahmy came up with a shot for the Hawks at 2:42, followed by a shot less than a minute later, the Hawks down by nine (46-55). Yet UNE's lead proved to be too great, with the Nor'Easters using free throws to pull away from the Hawks 62-48.

Coene had 14 points for the Hawks, while Dickson had 9 points. Fahmy put a strong defensive front with 12 rebounds for Roger Williams along with seven points.

Thompson put up 28 points for University of New England, while Swanson put up seven points and four rebounds. Drew Coveney (Londonderry, N.H.) had a strong defensive game with seven rebounds under the hoop.

Roger Williams (9-14, 7-9 CCC) will host Curry this Tuesday at 7:30pm. University of New England (12-11, 7-9 CCC) will travel to Quincy to meet Eastern Nazarene at 7:00pm.
