Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball punched its ticket to the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship Game with a 75-58 victory over the University of New England Thursday evening. The win for the Hawks gives the team its first berth to the CCC title game since 2008.
The Hawks came out on fire offensively, taking an early lead and never looking back. UNE took a brief 3-2 lead on a three-point play by CJ Autry (Standish, Maine) before the Hawks went back on top with a barrage of three-pointers.
Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) connected on three triples as part of a 19-6 run.
The Hawks' shooting from downtown played a large role in RWU grabbing a large lead in the first half. Roger Williams knocked down four of its first five treys while finishing the first half 7-of-12 from downtown. RWU would end up taking a 12-point halftime lead (41-29).
In the second half, RWU continued to control the pace of the game with timely shooting. Six minutes into the half, Coene knocked down back-to-back treys for the Hawks, with
Jaylen Jennings (Norwalk, Conn.) hitting a pull-up three to give RWU its largest lead of the game, a 20-point advantage (57-37).
The Nor'Easters trailed by double digits the entire half. UNE was able to get back within 12 (54-66) on a three-pointer by Ben Judson (Plaistow, N.H.) with just over three minutes left. However, the Hawks managed to burn a whole minute of clock thanks to a crucial offensive board by
Trevor Fahmy (Bedford, N.H.).
UNE would begin sending the Hawks to the line, but RWU sank seven of its final eight shots from the line to end any potential rally and advance to the title game.
Coene finished with a career-high 29 points for the Hawks, including five three-pointers and seven rebounds. Fahmy added five points and ten boards, while Jennigs scored 12 with six rebounds off the bench.
Devin Thompson (Winthrop, Mass.) led UNE with 13 points. Autry finished with 12 points and five rebounds, with Drew Coveney (Londonderry, N.H.) chipping in with nine boards and two steals.
Roger Williams (12-15) will travel on Saturday to the #4 seed Endicott, who defeated Nichols 82-80 in the other semifinal matchup. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. The University of New England closes out the season at 14-13.
