Endicott staves off Men’s Basketball

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball was defeated by the Endicott Gulls on Saturday afternoon, 51-64 in Commonwealth Coast Conference competition.
 
Endicott came out strong, winning the starting tip-off followed by a layup made just 13 seconds into the game by Drew Sawyer (Norwalk, Conn.). A steal by Sawyer followed by a layup by Chris Lipscomb (West Springfield, Mass.) brought the Endicott to a 6-2 lead.
 
An offensive turnover from the Hawks at 14:55 allowed the Gulls to move up 13-4 with a layup by Chris Light (Derry, N.H.). However, the Hawks came back with eight unanswered points, capped by a layup by Trevor Fahmy (Bedford, N.H.) at 11:36 to reduce the Gull lead to 12-15. The Hawks were able to hold off the Gulls for almost five minutes, until Stephen Basden's (Lynn, Mass.) tip-in at 9:49.
 
Back and forth baskets continued for the next few minutes. A three-point shot at 8:40 by Sawyer allowed the Gulls to pull further away from the Hawks, 23-14. At 7:13, Joel Villa's (Bronx, N.Y.) layup gave the Gulls a double digit lead, 25-14. 
 
Roger Williams struggled to push back against Endicott. A Gulls turnover at 5:42 gave the Hawks an opportunity, but the Hawks failed to make the baskets. The Gulls continued their drive and at 4:34 a jump shot by Christien Morneweck (Burlington, Mass.) made the score 30-16. The Gulls quick play challenged the Hawks to establish their position.
 
A steal by Vinny Clifford (Danvers, Mass.) and a three-point shot by Daquan Sampson (Germantown, Md.) with under a minute remaining of the half made the score 38-18. The Hawks, after not scoring since 4:21 were able to make the score 19-38 after Austin Coene's (Tyngsborough, Mass.) free throw with the clock stopped at 0:26.
 
A missed shot in the final second of the half left the Hawks behind 19-38 at the end of the first half. Endicott finished the half shooting 64 percent (16-25), including 54.5% from three-point range (6-11).
 
Roger Williams came out with a stronger offensive presence to start the second half. The Hawks were first to put up points with a shot made by Nick Marini (Loudonville, N.Y.) at 18:38. However, Lipscomb followed quickly after with a dunk at 18:08 for the Gulls now 40-21.
 
The Hawks still moved forward with a shot by Coene at 17:14 followed shortly by a shot from Andrew Wasik (Gainesville, Fla.) at 16:25 to make the score 25-40. Back and forth play moved the game with the Gulls leading the Hawks 44-29 at 14:11.
 
Free throw opportunities allowed the Hawks to gain some points. However, Basden's shot for Endicott at 12:12 allowed the Gulls to go up 49-31.
 
Jaylen Jennings (Norwalk, Conn.) made a basket for Roger Williams at 11:59. For the next few minutes the Hawks were unable to score until Marini's jump shot at 9:02. In just 30 seconds after Josh McCourt (Lincoln, R.I.) was able to put up a basket at 8:32. The Hawks now 37-52.
 
The play remained balanced for the next few minutes. At 4:56 Wasik brought the Hawks to just a ten-point deficit 47-57 with a layup. Foul shots brought the points up for both teams. The clock stopped at 2:46 with the Hawks falling behind 50-63. 
 
With a minute remaining in the game, Endicott still had not hit a shot since the ten-minute mark; only free throws had upped the points for the Gulls. Despite the cold shootin, the buzzer went off in favor of the Gulls.
 
Fahmy and Wasik tied for the most points, each putting up ten points for the Hawks. Fahmy also had a strong defensive game putting up a team-high seven rebounds.
 
Endicott's Sampson put up 11 points for the Gulls with eight rebounds. Basden had nine points for the Gulls. Lipscomb added eight points and six rebounds
 
Roger Williams (9-12, 7-7 CCC) will travel to Quincy this Wednesday to play Eastern Nazarene at 7:00pm. Endicott (12-9, 9-5 CCC) will also travel on Wednesday to meet University of New England at 7:30pm.
