Box Score WENHAM, Mass. — For 120 minutes Gordon Women's Soccer went toe-to-toe with Commonwealth Coast Conference favorite Roger Williams before ultimately settling for a 0-0 draw in the league opener for both squads. Freshman Kali Denty (Marshfield, Mass.) made a handful of big stops, including two point-blank opportunities, to keep the vaunted Hawks out of the twine for the tie.
The Fighting Scots move to 1-1-1 on the young season and 0-0-1 in the conference. Roger Williams remains without a positive mark on the year at 0-3-1.
The first scoring opportunity for either team came in the 17th minute when Jessica Harper (Mansfield, Ohio) sent a beautiful corner across the face of the goal. Sophomore Jill Kefalas (Wenham, Mass.) got a foot on the ball in front of the net, but the ball went just outside of the left post.
RWU's first defender
Samantha Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) put a pair of nice attempts on frame from deep, but Denty was there to save both shots. The remainder of the Hawks' attempts for the rest of the half were too far to threaten a score.
Roger Williams looked have a perfect look at going ahead with less than a minute to go in regulation. Off of a through ball, Woznicki was left unmarked at the six-yard box for the tap. Denty came off the near post and followed the ball before using a running catch to keep the shot out of the net.
Denty was forced into another tough save in the first overtime period, diving to her left to keep a shot from sneaking inside the near post. The save allowed the Fighting Scots to flip the script on possession almost instantly.
Perhaps Gordon's best chance to end the game came with just over a minute remaining in the first extra period. Harper hit another perfect ball that got punched out before landing at the feet of Kara Dry (Madison, Conn.) inside the 18. Dry took a touch and sent a screaming liner at the bottom of the crossbar, but the shot rocketed out of danger to send things to a second overtime.
Possession stayed in the midfield for much of the second overtime, but the Hawks put one last dangerous chance on frame at the very end. A long ball over the top of the defense found
Ericca Broderick (Great Barrington, Mass.) in stride down the right side. Broderick put a little chip on it, but Denty was able to slide out for the stop to end the game at zeroes a side.
Roger Williams held a 19-7 shot advantage and 9-3 on goal, but Denty's nine stops helped pitch the big shutout.
Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) made three saves for the Hawks in a full game's work.
Gordon remains home on Tuesday as a part of a three-game home stand against NEC at 4 p.m. Roger Williams will look to get into the win column in its home opener tomorrow morning against St. Lawrence at 11 a.m.
