EASTON, Mass. - The Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team began the 2016-17 season this past weekend at the Stonehill College Doubles Invitational, where the team finished third.
Freshmen
Brendan White (Old Lyme, Conn.) and
Jake Cole (Sterling, Va.) claimed the top spot at the B Flight after going 3-1 over the course of the day. The two started with a 7-4 loss to Ryan Foster and Danny Waung of Assumption, but rallied back with a 10-1 win over Shaw Campbell and Laurent Ruttkowski of Eastern Nazarene. The two followed with a 6-5 victory against Elmer Lutz and Peter Campito of Holy Cross, then closed out the day by defeating Joan Castillo and Dimitri Vlassov of Stonehill 7-4.
At the C Flight,
Thomas O'Leary (North Easton, Mass.) and
Matthew Russo (Branford, Conn.) went 2-2 on the day. They dropped their opening match 7-4 to Reb Mariano and Tom Knight of Assumption but came back with a 6-5 win over Kyle Pierson and Kaden Swarr of Eastern Nazarene. Tom Cimini and Pat O'Shea of Holy Cross downed the two 8-3 in their next match. However, O'Leary and Russo ended the day with a 7-4 victory over Tom Buckley and Manu Ravichandrakumar of Stonehill.
At the A Flight,
Grant Rosenberg (Melville, N.Y.) and
Nick Spoor (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) collected only one win on the day, defeating Henry Haars and Mike Varda of Holy Cross by a 10-1 margin. The D Flight saw
Alex Bonanno (Westford, Mass.) and
Stratton Stilianos (Lynnfield, Mass.) also win one match, a 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 decision over Andres Biondi and Davis Steelman of Eastern Nazarene.
