Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team and Wentworth Institute of Technology battled to a scoreless double overtime draw Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.
The first ten minutes of play found the Leopards controlling the ball in their offensive end for a higher rate than the Hawks. However thanks to RWU's defense, Wentworth was unable to get a shot off in that span.
A lack of offensive chances characterized the majority of play of the first half. The Hawks attempted just one shot over the first 30 minutes, an attempt by
Jenna Hart (Cheshire, Conn.) that deflected off of a Leopard defender in the eighth minute. Conversely, Mykaela Scarpace (Marlborough, Conn.) and Emily Richard (Fremont, N.H.) both put up shot that were wide of their intended target.
Towards the end of the half, Wentworth continued to push the ball into RWU's half of the field but were still denied by the Hawk defense. The Leopards had back-to-back offside calls in the 32nd minute to deny potential chances to score. The game would go into halftime scoreless at the break.
The pace began to pick up for both teams at the onset of the second half.
Kylie Casey (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) notched RWU's first shot on goal five minutes into the period. However, it would be saved by Leopard keeper Micaela Robinson (Goshen, N.Y.).
A minute later, Wentworth went down the other end and came within inches of scoring the first goal of the game. Scarpace got a header off of a free kick towards the back left end of the net. It would have scored if not for a heads-up defensive kick save by
Samantha Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.).
In the 56th minute, the Hawks had a good look at a scoring chance, when
Jodie Lavigne (Coventry, R.I.) crossed a pass to
Jordyn Labriola (Hopkinton, Mass.), who had a potential one-on-one chance with the goalie. However, she was unable to cleanly secure the pass before Wentworth cleared the ball away.
Both teams threatened to score numerous times over the rest of regulation but came away without a tally. The Hawks' last chance came in the closing seconds of the period, with Hart getting flagged for offsides by the slimmest of margins.
In the first overtime period, Wentworth had the only shot attempt but nearly made it count. Michelle Murphy (West Islip, N.Y.) fired a shot from the left side the bent towards the right corner of the net but hooked just wide.
Four minutes into the second overtime period, Mary Annon (Concord, N.H.) put a shot on target that was punched away by Hawk keeper
Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.) but rolled away from her and came close to rolling into the right corner of the net. Luckily for the Hawks, she was able to get back up and secure the loose ball before the Leopards could knock in the rebound.
In the 117th minute, Hart almost found Labriola with a long pass to the middle, but Robinson was able to get to the ball before Labriola could get there first. Woznicki made one more push for RWU in the closing seconds of the game, firing a shot on goal that was turned away by Robinson.
Robinson made four saves for the Leopards in the game, while O'Donovan stopped seven shots.
Roger Williams (1-4-2, 0-0-2 CCC) will host Emmanuel on Wednesday at 7:00pm, while Wentworth (4-1-1, 1-0-1 CCC) travels to #10 Amherst College tomorrow for a 1:00pm game.
