Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team snapped a three-game skid and picked up its first win of the year with a 2-0 victory over Mount Ida College Wednesday evening.
Mount Ida's Juan Brenes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) stayed active for the Mustangs early on, putting up three shots in the first four minutes of play. The Mustangs held possession in their offensive end for a large part of the beginning of the game.
Roger Williams had its first chance to score in the tenth minute, with
Sean Janson (Avon, Conn.) firing a free kick from just outside the top of the box. He bent it towards the top right corner of the net but hooked it just wide.
Garrett Bolton (Candia, N.H.) came close to giving RWU the lead in the 14th minute, booting a 30-yarder from near the left sideline. He came inches away from putting it in the top shelf, as the ball bounced off of the top right corner of the post.
In the second part of the period, the Hawk offense began to gain percentage at a higher frequency, ultimately culminating in a goal in the 34th minute.
Spencer Thibodeau (Kennebunkport, Maine) slipped a short pass to Janson, allowing him to push a slow roller that just hugged inside the right corner of the post for his first goal of the year.
Four minutes later,
Kabine Conde (Philadelphia, Pa.) had a good chance to add to the Hawk lead with a shot from 20 yards out. However, he pushed it a little too high, sailing it over the goal and keeping the Hawk lead at one. RWU would eventually go into the half leading by the same score.
The Hawks continued to keep the pressure on the Mustangs in the second half, outshooting Mount Ida 9-4 in the period. One of those shots for RWU would make its way to the back of the net courtesy of
Tyler Kuchenbecker (Wellesley, Mass.). In the 76th minute,
Chris Chieffo (North Haven, Conn.) sent a corner kick to back end of the net, finding Kuchenbecker for the header and the second goal of the contest.
The Hawks would hold on to their two-goal lead and collect their first win of the year.
Edmund Geschickter (Brookline, Mass.) needed only one save for the shutout victory.
On Saturday, Roger Williams (1-3-0) heads to Gordon while Mount Ida (2-1-0) hosts Clark.
