Box Score BRISTOL, R.I—The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team defeated Curry College Tuesday night 4-1 in a Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup.
The Hawks entered the game second in the CCC standings, trailing Endicott College by three goals.
Both squads sported pink warmup shirts in honor of all of those who have been affected by breast cancer. Each Hawk dedicated their performance Tuesday to someone whom battled cancer.
The Hawks dominated ball possession in the first minutes of the half, with two quality shots that just missed the goal. Curry's physical, tight defense allowed the Hawks to make long passes downfield for breakaway opportunities.
The first goal of the game came in the 16
th minute with a lob pass from
Alli Santacroce (Burlington, Conn.) to
Arianna Delli Carpini (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) whom was crashing to the middle. Goalie Kristen Buzzotta came out of the net and challenged Carpini but the ball bounced in for a goal. This was Carpini's third goal of the season.
Curry managed to send the ball into RWU territory for a brief moment, but the Hawks managed to hold the Colonels to only two shots in the first half.
Jodie Lavigne (Coventry, R.I.) had an open opportunity near the close of the first half when
Ericca Broderick (Great Barrington, Mass.) passed to the middle to a sprinting Lavigne. Lavigne had to stop and change directions which led her to shooting just high of the crossbar.
The Hawks came out in the second half in control with a shot by
Raleigh LeMiere-Barnes (Los Angeles, Calif.) in the 1
st minute. The shot headed for the top left corner but was saved by Buzzotta.
The Colonels tied up the game on a quick breakaway in the 11
th minute by Tayla Randall.
The Hawks answered quickly to take back the lead less than a minute after Randall's goal. Carpini scored her second goal of the game on a rebound. The assist went to
Ali Waxgiser (Harding, N.J.).
Carpini scored her third goal of the night with just under 33 minutes left. Waxgiser gave a quick pass to a curring Carpini whom scored just a few feet away from a diving goalie.
"We played very well, which means we attacked with pace and power getting into the final third and testing their goalkeeper," said Head Coach
Tim Moody. "We took plenty of quality shots from different players from different positions on the pitch. It wasn't a one-person show, which is very important...
"We are getting into our grove and the work done on the training ground is starting to bear fruit. We have players who are seeing the right passes to make, as well the right runs and movement that cause danger to the opposition. The players are linking up well and you can see good partnerships beginning to naturally occur with players thinking along the same lines.
"The key to our success is we have competition for places and everyone challenging for a starting spot. This allows us to try different things and the level of play not dropping when we need to make an adjustment or tweak an attacking or defensive shape. You can see the patterns and the shapes we move in and how we try to break teams down, starting from our goalkeeper all the way to our forwards finishing with a quality shot on goal...
"Players are more confident when they step on the pitch because of the hours that have been spent practicing in different environments. Some days we play on grass, the next day on turf depending on if we are at home or on the road, is it a fast turf field, or a heavy slow grass pitch. We try to give our players the experience before they have to face it for real.
"Tonight, it was great to watch and the game flew by because we played so well and entertained the fans as well as the coaching staff, hopefully we will have more of the same in October."
Samantha Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) added to the Hawks' lead with a header that found the back of the net. The assist was granted to
Kasey Provost (Peabody, Mass.) whom took the corner kick.
The Hawks outshot the Colonels (8-4-3, 1-2-2 CCC) 31 to 6.
Natalie O'Donovan received the win and her record improved to 6-5-2.
With the win, RWU (7-6-2, 4-0-1 CCC) is tied with Endicott for first place in the CCC standings. The Hawks will face off against Wentworth Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon in Boston, Mass. in another conference matchup. The Hawks look to secure a top spot in the CCC standings with only five regular season games left.
