Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team continued its reign atop the Commonwealth Coast Conference with a 3-0 victory over Nichols College Wednesday evening.
The Hawks have now won both career meetings against the Bison, who are entering their second season as a varsity program.
Roger Williams quickly jumped out to the lead with a 25-8 win in the opening set. Both teams traded points back and forth early on before the Hawks took command with a 12-0 run to break a three-all tie. RWU led by as many as 18 (23-5) and took the set on a Bison attack error.
RWU grabbed the second set by a 25-11 margin, using an early run to break away from Nichols. Roger Williams scored the first three points of the set as part of a 10-1 Hawk opening run, leading to a Nichols timeout. Roger Williams would extend the lead to 18-5, forcing another Nichols stoppage. RWU never let up its double-digit lead, with
Katie Nugent (Lynnfield, Mass.) spiking the final point for the Hawks.
Nichols fared better in the third set, even taking its first lead of the match (3-2) on a Moriah Burns (Holland, Mass.) service ace. The two sides would trade runs before RWU scored seven out of eight points for a 13-7 lead. Nichols climbed back in with five straight points. However the Hawks put the game out of reach with a 6-0 run to turn a 15-14 lead into 21-14. RWU would ultimately take the match 25-18 on a Bison attack into the net.
Nugent,
Maddie Neuberger (Remsenburg, N.Y.), and
Jill McManaman (Bellerose Village, N.Y.) all finished with eight kills.
Grace Kenningham (Houston, Texas) led RWU with 18 digs while
Victoria Caruso (Yonkers, N.Y.) and
Emiley Melillo (Seattle, Wash.) combined for 28 assists.
J'ena Baker (Rockledge, Fla.) led Nichols with six kills. Jayla Simmons (Rockledge, Fla.) had 13 digs with Zoe Chevrette (Wilbraham, Mass.) adding eight assists and four digs.
Roger Williams (16-6, 7-0 CCC) will host Eastern Nazarene College Saturday morning on Senior Day in the team's final regular season home match. Nichols (3-22, 0-6 CCC) will host Endicott also on Saturday.
