Box Score BRISTOL, R.I.—The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team was blanked by the UMass-Dartmouth Corsairs (7-7) Thursday night 3-0 at Bayside Field in Bristol, R.I.
The Hawks entered the nonconference matchup looking to improve their 4-9 record as they roll into the final stretch of their season.
Taylor Powell (Windham, N.H) opened the first half for the Hawks with a shot on goal in the first four minutes but it was saved by UMD's goalie Allison Burke. The Corsairs answered back with six shots of their own.
The Hawks came close to scoring in the 14
th minute when
Lea Peterson (Upton, Mass.) just missed wide right in UMD territory and then again in a series of shots by
Alex Coppinger (Guilderland, N.Y) in the 19
th minute.
The Corsairs struck in the 24
th minute with a goal by Desarai Melendez, assisted by Erin Kish. RWU goalie
Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.) was pulled out of the net as Kish passed to Melendez, whom was cutting and put a shot past Mary-Kathryn Slattery (Old Orchard Beach, Maine).
The Corsairs tried to score again to finish the half, but Lunn kept the ball away from the net and finished the half with five saves.
The Roger Williams squad came out firing in the second half. The Hawks came close to tying it up in the 2
nd minute but
Sydney McCarthy's (Little Falls, N.Y.) shot went just wide. Coppinger's shot off the corner also went wide in the 3
rd minute. In the 6
th minute, the Hawks came even closer to their first goal on an
Emma Stevens' (Brewster, Mass.) shot that was saved right in front of the net.
In the 16
th minute, Kish shot a bullet to the back of the net off the corner from Haley Donahay to add another goal to their lead.
The Hawks responded with a breakaway but was unable to put the ball past a scrambling Burke.
Delaney Burns scored for the Corsairs, unassisted, past a diving Slattery, which lifted UMD to a 3-0 lead with 13 minutes left in the game.
The Hawks were unable to answer and fell to 4-10 on the season. Burke had 13 saves for the Corsairs and improved to 8-7.
The Hawks will face Gordon College Saturday afternoon in a conference matchup at home.
