Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The second-seeded Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team punched its ticket to the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship Game with a 1-0 victory over third-seeded Western New England University Wednesday evening.
Roger Williams (13-7-2) will host the #4 seed Gordon College Saturday for the CCC crown. The Fighting Scots upset top-seeded Endicott College 2-1 in overtime in the other semifinal game. Western New England finishes the season at 10-8-2.
The early part of the game was punctuated by strong play on the ball, with the midfielders and defenders for both teams swarming to prevent any offensive opportunity. It took over ten minutes into the game for the first shot attempt to be taken for either side, with Brooke Labrie (Granby, Mass.) notching a long shot that would be punched away by RWU keeper
Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.).
Alli Santacroce (Burlington, Conn.) had the Hawks' first offensive opportunity in the 16
th minute, a chip that hung just a bit too far to the right.
In the 24
th minute, Labrie stepped up with another offensive chance for the Golden Bears. She took the ball on the left side of the box off of a corner kick and put a shot that was headed for the goal. However,
Samantha Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) came through and booted the shot away before Western New England could tally the score.
The final portion of the opening half commenced similar to the early part, with a lack of offensive chances for either team.
Arianna Delli Carpini (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) had the lone shot attempt over the final 20 minutes of play, having it blocked off a Western New England defender. With only eight shots total between the Hawks and the Golden Bears, the game went into halftime scoreless.
The Hawks were finally able to break through in the 50
th minute. A yellow card on Western New England led to a free kick for the Hawks. Santacroce served up the kick into the box towards Woznicki, who slipped a short pass to
Kasey Provost (Peabody, Mass.). Provost was able to get off the shot just before Golden Bear defense could turn it away, giving RWU the 1-0 lead.
RWU caught a break in the 65
th minute, when Shawna O'Neill (Worcester, Mass.) crossed a pass into the middle towards Kaeli Serafino (Ludlow, Mass.). Her pass bounced off an RWU defender and was headed towards the goal, but O'Donovan secured the ball before it crossed into the net.
Western New England would get lucky as well in the 76
th minute. A long through pass on the left found the foot of Delli Carpini streaking upfield. She brought the ball into the penalty area and was able to get off a shot, but Alex Lemekha (Stamford, Conn.) slid in front of her just in time to have Delli Carpini force the shot a bit wide.
The final ten minutes of the game was a frantic flurry by Western New England to try to get their offense in gear, but the Hawk defense held up and preserved the shutout and the championship berth.
O'Donovan and Lemekha each finished with three saves on the night.
