Men’s Basketball Earns Win Over Wheaton, Tully Wins #200 At RWU

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team held off Wheaton College 72-70 Tuesday evening in a non-conference matchup between the two squads. The win for Roger Williams gives Head Coach Mike Tully his 200th career victory at RWU.

Both sides traded baskets for most of the opening session of the first quarter. The two teams combined for five ties and three lead changes over the first ten minutes of play. Halfway through the period, Jake Heaton (Shelton, Conn.) tied the game at 17 with a three-pointer before Drew Vittum (Grafton, Mass.) went 1-for-2 to at the line to put the Lyons back on top.

That foul shot would help begin a 9-2 run for Wheaton to help the Lyons take a 26-21 lead with just under eight minutes left in the first half. The Hawks fought their way back to pull within one (29-30) but Wheaton managed to hold on to the lead, eventually going into halftime up 36-31.

In the second half, Nick Marini (Loudonville, N.Y.) knocked down a jumper to cap off a 6-0 run and give RWU a 37-36 lead with 16:22 left. Robby Lowey (Foxboro, Mass.) answered with a three-point play for Wheaton that began a back-and-forth affair between RWU and Wheaton.

Roger Williams would ultimately take a 66-60 lead with five minutes left. Wheaton had its opportunities to cut into the deficit but would go 2-for-7 from the field over a four-minute stretch.

However, Wheaton still managed to make it a one-point game in the final minute. Unfortunately for the Lyons, they would miss their final two shots and turn the ball over on the final possession. Jaylen Jennings (Norwalk, Conn.) would put the game away with one second remaining, hitting his first free throw and grabbing his own rebound off of an intentional miss.

Austin Coene (Tyngsborough, Mass.) scored 33 points on 11-of-13 shooting from the field with seven rebounds. Jennings added 13 points and four rebounds with Marini chipping in with nine points and six assists.

Ryan Fogarty (Walpole, Mass.) led Wheaton with 19 points. Duaka Ekwensi (Morris Plains, N.J.) logged a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds.

Roger Williams (4-0) heads to Connecticut College on Sunday. Wheaton (3-1) plays at Boston University also on Sunday.
